Zacuto GH5 Cage – Form-fitting and Compatible with Atomos Recorders

We visited the Zacuto booth at Cine Gear Expo 2017 and talked to Jens, who showed us the latest tweaks to their upcoming Zacuto GH5 Cage.

If you’re in the market for a cage for your new Panasonic GH5, then this may be a very good option indeed. The new Zacuto GH5 Cage remains faithful to the main requirements of a cage, as it is light and unobtrusive, yet provides a solid platform for all your necessary accessories. In terms of structure, the cage comes with a side handle that attaches onto the left side of the camera via a Z-rail, which you may also know as NATO rail. Zacuto has chosen to do away with metal along the control side of the camera, leaving a lot more room to reach the knobs and buttons on the camera grip.

The cage attaches to the camera via a tripod screw at the bottom, in addition to using the camera strap eyelets as further mounting points for added stability. An optional handle can be attached on the NATO rail along the top of the cage, allowing for forwards and backwards adjustment for better weight distribution, all the while leaving enough clearance to use the GH5 audio module.

Zacuto GH5 Cage

The Zacuto GH5 Cage doesn’t offer any cold shoes on the cage structure itself, featuring one instead on top of the included side handle. This leaves plenty of room for the audio module and XLR cables on the other side of the camera.

The bottom of the Zacuto GH5 Cage features a dovetail system that is compatible with the Zacuto VCT Pro baseplate, as well as with an upcoming 15mm rod accessory. In addition, the cage features a mounting port for a Metabones adapter such as the Speed Booster without the need for extra pieces.

Another accessory that will be coming soon is a mounting piece for Atomos recorders. With the shape of a hinge and mounted directly onto the cage, this accessory aims to be a lot sturdier than a monitor arm or ball mount, and gives you tilting capabilities for shooting at various angles.

The Zacuto GH5 Cage will also come with a cable pincher that screws directly into the camera and is independent of the cage. It allows you to secure your HDMI cable, while staying out of the way of the articulating LCD screen.

It certainly looks like a lot of care has gone into every inch of the Zacuto GH5 Cage, as every aspect of the design aims to maximise usability and comfort. The Zacuto GH5 Cage is already available for pre-order for $495, and should start shipping within the next few weeks.
