Our FS5 recently arrived and we couldn’t wait to take it out to the pier and test it out! The main features we wanted to test out were the slog3 color profile in both UHD 4K and 1080p in 24fps, 60fps, 120fps, and 240fps. The video below are the results of shooting in slog3, 1080p, 24fps, 120fps, and 240fps. Here are our first impressions:
The FS5 shoots 10 bit 4:2:2 in 1080p and the footage looks great, very close to its older brother the FS7. The broadcast ready 50mbps XAVC-L codec is robust and the flat slog3 color profile grades beautifully and retains 14 stops of dynamic range.
We did notice a slight drop in quality in slow-motion in both 120fps and 240fps. The image is slightly softer and noisier in the shadows.
The footage did not seem to exhibit the banding and macro blocking that the UHD 4K image does which is recorded in 8 bit 4:2:0 at 100mbps.
Overall, we are incredibly impressed with the FS5’s 1080p footage. It will make a wonderful B-Camera to our FS7.
Next week we’ll take a look at the FS5’s UHD 4K capabilities.
