PHFX’s new REDCamAssist is a powerful free online tool for all users of RED Digital Cinema cameras and R3D REDCODE RAW workflow. For anyone unfamiliar with RED cameras, the myriad possible combinations of resolution, associated crops, aspect ratios and R3D REDCODE data rates can be overwhelming to say the least. Phil Holland of PHFX has created a simple online tool called REDCamAssist that generates a comprehensive data sheet for any and all possible combinations of settings on all RED camera bodies. REDCamAssist is accessible from the PHFX website. With six simple input criteria, REDCamAssist generates a full blown datasheet that will prove more than useful to DIT’s and post production teams when planning post workflow especially. You may remember that Blackmagic Design recently announced shipping for the URSA Mini 4.6K, but it seems RED had a card up their sleeves on March 17th, as well. Coincidentally, RED RAVEN is now shipping, too. RED RAVEN is shipping Buried in the depths of reduser.net are several announcements concerning the delivery of RED RAVEN cameras, with the latest being made by Jarred Land on March 10th: “Raven – Still right on track, We will be shipping our first batch of Ravens at the end of next week. This is a completely new line so it will take them a few weeks ( as it always does ) to get everything dialed in so expect a few dozen to come out of the oven at the first then jump to a ramp up in the first few weeks of April. Also, just a heads up, the price for Raven will be going up at NAB… so if you are planning on jumping in it would probably be a good idea to get your place in line before that announcement as we will honor the existing price up till then.” He is backed by Brent on March 17th, making the promise a reality: “Want the good news or the GOOD news? Good = RAVEN packages will ship in same case as SCARLET-W. But black instead of grey… Good = First RAVEN blast being prepped.” So, it seems that the RED RAVEN is finally shipping—at the same time as the URSA Mini 4.6K. We’re a long while from back orders being fulfilled and both cameras being available to everybody, but it is certainly nice to know that the time is near. Now, what does this simultaneous shipping announcement tell us about the companies and the competition between the two? Let’s take a look. RED RAVEN vs. Blackmagic Design URSA mini 4.6K URSA mini 4.6K ($5,495.00 PL body only) vs. RAVEN 4.5K ($5,950.00 Brain only) Nearly twelve months ago, at NAB 2015, Blackmagic announced the Ursa Mini. With a little over two weeks to spare before NAB 2016, Grant Petty announced that the camera would be shipping; albeit with some changes that weren’t to everybody’s liking. In all honesty, many customers—especially those that pre-ordered—are quite vocal in their disappointment due to both the delay and the changes that have been made. On the other hand, RED RAVEN was announced in September 2015. A month later, RED gave us some exciting news—the new camera was the be upgraded from 4K to 4.5K, with no change to the price tag. It now looks like they’re ramping up their delivery lines to fulfill pre-orders. They’re also throwing in a free hard case. Sadly, however, the price is set to be increased at NAB 2016. There’s an ever so slight canyon between the two cameras regarding price—you can’t shoot with a brain only RED—but they’re both sub $10,000 ready to shoot. Feature wise, they are in a similar ballpark and actually, both companies are a little closer than it may appear at first glance. RED Digital Cinema vs. Blackmagic Design Both companies are relatively new to the game when compared to the likes of Arri, Sony, and Canon. They’re disruptive companies—underdogs with a penchant for aggressive marketing and innovative (perhaps slightly maverick) ideas on how to build a cinema camera. Personally, I like that attitude and would love to see more of it. It’s awesome watching the new kids on the block deliver great, affordable gear. Remember NAB 2007? A 4K cinema camera for $17,000? You wouldn’t see that from anybody else back then! As much as I love to see the two companies make a stir in the industry, and feel that they will improve the market for end consumers, there’s one thing I don’t like as much; Blackmagic’s lack of communication. Changing specs and manufacturing processes to get production running is fine; they just need to be more open with their customers. Wrap-up Developing excellent cameras for an affordable price is great, but when you’re a community-driven company, then you need to adapt your marketing and communication style to fit. Perhaps the golden path is in the middle, a combination of the two: fewer cryptic rumor-like announcements (RED) and a little more communication with paying customers as we head into the future (BMD). If you don’t already own a RED, chances are you’ve dreamed of owning one. The RED Raven may be a dream come true for many. It’s also the first sub-$10,000 RED camera. RED are accepting deposits on orders beginning today and will begin shipping in Feb 2016. RED have launched a brand new RED Raven microsite here: RED Raven. So I’m not going to list all the specs. I will however touch on the highlights that make Raven such a compelling new player in the sub $10k space. RED Digital Cinema are the original badboy revolutionaries. The RED One was forged from the dream of no compromise 4K+ digital cinema tools for everyone. The story of RED’s inception and early days, as well as how its founding members came together makes for some very inspiring reading. The people involved, their passion and drive to push digital cinema technology beyond the limits imposed by large, slow moving corporate behemoths is what makes RED, and its various personalities so loved by its advocates. Jim Jannard was and is still a genuine hero to many, and Jarred is now leading the company, its team, products and dream forward into ever deeper uncharted technological territory. Over the years RED have delivered on close to all of their promises, some would say all but one. While we have all watched every new sensor, every new camera body and iteration with longing, ordering a RED package remains for many of us as unachievable as driving a brand new Ferrari out of the showroom. The #4K4ALL moniker finally looks set to put that right… for some. With the Raven brain only at $5,950 and two packages, the “Jetpack” package and “Base I/O” package at $9,750 and $9,950 respectively there’s still a massive part of the digital cinema camera market that won’t be submitting an order. The fixed Canon EF lens mount will disappoint some people, still, I believe the price is more than fair when you acknowledge exactly what you’re getting. 4K Dragon Sensor You get one of the best imagers on the planet right now, a 4096 x 2160 Super 35mm 4K Dragon sensor promising the same 16.5+ stops of dynamic range and color science as the Dragon in Scarlet, Epic and Weapon. It may not be quite as large at 20.48mm in width, but realistically it’s still large enough for all the shallow DOF anyone could really need. Impressive Frame Rates Raven promises to deliver 4K (4096 x 2160) at 120fps, 3K (3072 x 1620) at 160fps and 2K (2048 x 1080) at up to 240fps. R3D Redcode RAW REDcode RAW is arguably one of RED’s most valuable and important technologies. It is the most efficient, fastest and most workflow friendly RAW codec in existence. R3D is a pleasure to work with and offers a whole spectrum of compression ratios. 3:1 maximum available REDCODE for 4K (4096 x 2160) at 24 fps 7:1 maximum available REDCODE for 4K (4096 x 2160) at 60 fps 13:1 maximum available REDCODE for 4K (4096 x 2160) at 120 fps Simultaneous ProRes Recording Raven is capable of recording R3D and 2K Apple ProRes (422 HQ, 422 or 422 LT) simultaneously providing even more flexible post workflow. Compact and Lightweight The Raven is RED’s lightest camera yet at 1.6kg (3.5lbs). It is the same body shape as Weapon and is compatible with the Weapon modules. This is something to consider seriously when weighing up other camera options especially if you plan to fly your camera on a gimbal or drone. Conclusion While many will criticise RED about its expensive proprietary media and accessories, I believe Raven represents fantastic value considering RED’s position as one of the main pillars of digital cinema. Where some relative newcomers are still proving their worth, stumbling over features, design and reliability to get into the game, RED pretty much invented it and have proven themselves over and over again. I don’t see the RED Raven necessarily taking huge numbers of customers from Sony, Canon or Blackmagic Design that are not in the market to spend $10k on a basic camera package in the first place, however I do see a very good reason for anyone who really cares about creating extraordinary images to stop, think twice and consider stepping up their investment if they can. RED Digital Cinema have just brought Dragon to the table for a lot more people. Red Digital Cinema recently dropped an unexpected bombshell that radiated waves of excited expectation among filmmakers everywhere. This bombshell has a name. The Red Raven, a new $6K RED camera. Word of RED Raven spread fast, attached to the simple hashtag #4K4ALL. Yes, the original disruptor, innovator and “freedom fighter” leading the independent film world into its biggest technological and creative revolution is at it again. Details have remained vague and a full announcement has been promised for Friday 25th September but just today a few new details emerged. #4K4ALL carries with it very high expectations in terms of an affordable price point for RED’s latest new camera, and today we have a much better idea of where the RED Raven will be positioned. Here’s what we know from Jarred Land himself: “The Raven doesn’t replace Scarlet, It’s a new category in our line up. Raven is a younger, hungrier, more “spirited” member of the RED family with a bit of a chip on his shoulder ready to take on the entire sub-$10k market with images that you will be incredibly proud of.” Jarred revealed that the brain only will be $5950. “It is a real Dragon sensor with real Dragon Pixels. So 20.48mm wide, a bit shy of Academy 35mm and APS-C”. Raven is smaller than Scarlet Dragon but the same size as Weapon, so it will be compatible with Weapon modules. RED release a new version of their “Bomb EVF” and a low profile, cable-free 4.7″ touch LCD at IBC 2015 among several other announcements. The RED OLED EVF has a resolution of 1080p and is compatible with their new RED Weapon Camera. What is new on this one besides the improved screen and optics is that it connects to the RED Weapon “wirelessly” via a connector built into the camera housing. The new 720p 4.7 inch RED TOUCH LCD connects to the RED Weapon wirelessly as well. It’s a pretty nice ergonomic idea and great for all RED Weapon owners. Unfortunately Epic and Scarlet users will have to use an adaptor to connect to the EVF & LCD via the standard cable. The RED TOUCH LCD costs $1.450 (coming soon) and the OLED EVF will set you back $4.150. These products are certainly in a higher price-range than comparable products like the Blackmagic URSA Viewfinder that comes with similar specs. But the convenience of the new small form factor and wireless connectivity are impressive and worthwhile for those working on professional productions. In other news newsshooter reports about a supposed new affordable RED camera that RED have been teasing about with hashtag #4K4ALL that might be named “RED Raven”.
