Laowa has released more information about their new Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Lens that we reported about last year. This 2:1 magnification macro lens expends Laowa’s line of macro lenses next to the Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2:1 and Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens which we reviewed. Let’s take a closer look at this world’s first 100mm 2:1 macro lens! World’s First 2:1 100mm Macro Lens The Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO photo lens was announced back in September 2018 with very little information. Eight months later, we now know everything about the world’s first 2:1 100mm macro lens. This lens is Full Frame compatible and can focus from infinity up to 2:1 magnification. The 100mm f/2.8 2:1 is the second lens in the Laowa 2:1 macro line-up, next to the Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2:1. If you ever shot macro footage, I guess one of the most popular lenses out there is the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM. While this lens is pretty decent, it’s only a 1:1 magnification ratio lens. If you are shooting microscopic objects or insects, a 2:1 magnification could be a must-have. It means the magnification factor is doubled, making lens shadows less of an issue with such lenses. The Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS lens next to the Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x and the Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS. Image credit: ShaoWeiWei The Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x is relatively compact considering it’s a 2:1 lens. Next to the 100mm from Canon and Sony, it’s only slightly longer, but it doesn’t feature image stabilization. Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x APO Characteristics This lens features 12 elements in 10 groups. Also, it is apochromatic, so chromatic aberration should be nearly invisible. According to Venus Optics, the lens should suppress almost all chromatic aberrations, at both ‘in-focus’ & ‘out-of-focus’ areas. The Laowa 100mm f/2.8 is available in Canon, Nikon, and Sony FE mount. The Canon version is the only one to feature a CPU chip and motor for aperture control via the camera motor. No autofocus for any mounts, but a focus indicator will appear in the camera to help you get a perfectly sharp shot. The Canon EF version features a CPU chip and aperture motor. The f/2.8 aperture is standard for this type of lenses, and the number of aperture blades – 9 for the Canon version, 7 for the Nikon one, and 13 for the Sony FE – should provide a pleasing bokeh. The focusing mechanism is internal, so the lens front element does not expand when you change focus. The filter thread is 67mm, and the lens measures Ф72 x 125 mm (Sony version: Ф72 x 155 mm) for a total weight of 638g. Image credit: Keith Cooper Pricing and Availability The lens is available for pre-order for $499. It should start shipping from late May/early June. In terms of comparison, the Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x retails for the same price as the Rokinon 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens at $499. The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM retails for $749, and the Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS Lens is $1,498. So, this lens is an affordable option considering its the only 2:1 glass available. What do you think of this new Laowa 100mm f/2.8 lens? Do you consider buying in replacement of your current macro lens? Let us know in the comments below!

Venus Optics launched a new Kickstarter campaign on a somewhat old lens: The Laowa 24mm f/14 macro probe was announced back in 2016 at their Photokina booth. Now, almost two years later, that very lens is the headliner of a Kickstarter campaign. Let’ have a look at this thing and compare it to the 2016 prototype design as there are some significant differences to be found! This “lens” is really something special. It’s a 24mm wide angle lens but at the same time it’s a 2x macro lens. I never encountered a lens with these two characteristics combined. And if you did, here’s yet another feature which proofes the uniqueness of the Laowa 24mm probe even further: It’s 40cm (15.75″) long! Laowa 24mm f/14 Macro Probe Lens When we stumbled over the very weird looking Laowa 24mm f/14 macro lens back in 2016, we simply had to cover it. The design was (and is) so unique you might end up asking yourself: What the hell is it? Well, it’s a macro lens but not an ordianry macro lens, obviously. It offers a focal lens of 24mm, so we’re looking at a wide angle lens here. But this wide angle lens is a 2x macro lens at the same time and it comes in a very odd 40cm housing. That’s also the reason for its strange f/14 aperture, the front element is just too tiny and the lens itself is just too long for allowing a faster f-stop. Check out those videos for a rundown of all the things this lens is capable of: This 2018 version of the Laowa 24mm f/14 lens differs slightly from the 2016 prototype version, though. There are some neat additions to the design: LED ringlight, updated overall design and a waterproof and dustproof front barrel. Features and Specs The Loawa 24mm macro probe lens definitely allows for some very unique shots but at f/14 you’ll need a lot of light, indeed. Therefore, Laowa decided to implement a LED ringlight right at the tip of the lens. With it you’ll be able to illuminate your subject even in the darkest spots. Dead frontal light isn’t the most pleasing way of lighting a scene, obviously, but at least you’ll be able to get some decent shots with this ringlight (micro USB powered, the port is on the lens barrel itself). The most unique feature of this lens is certainly its massive length. It might be seen as a disadvantage (think of packing this lens into your bag..) but in reality this design opens the door for a whole new style of shooting: You can get macro shots of objects from a safe distance, you can perform a “push-in” between small objects too narrow for a camera to fit through. The relatively short focal length of 24mm is pretty unique, too. But since a shorter focal length results in a deeper depth of field, you can capture even more from the surrounding rather that end up with completely blurred background. Laowa 24mm (left) vs. “regular” macro lens (right). Another benefit of such a long lens barrel is the fact that you won’t end up casting shadows from the lens itself on your subject. And, lastly, the waterproof front barrel offers creative flexibility which doesn’t end on water surfaces. Pricing and Availability The Laowa 24mm is available for purchase backing. That means, you’ll hand over your money to Laowa and therefore support them making this lens a reality. While working prototypes exist already, mass production is different kind of thing. But since we’re talking about an established company with an experise in making high quality lenses, the risk should be manageable. This is some pretty advanced lens design. In 2016 Laowa claimed to be ready for market in 2017 but it took them a full year longer. The reason for that is the really complicated lens design. Although this lens might look a little bit like a toy it’s a pretty advanced piece of gear, really. It consists of 27 elements in 19 groups. That’s a lot! it weights 474g (16.72 oz) and you can choose between Canon EF, Nikon F or Sony FE mounts. Or, for an additional $200, you can get a PL mount version. If you choose the PL version, the focus and aperture rings will sport 0.8 pitch gears. Early bird tiers start at $1,099 and if everything goes smoothly, first lenses will be shipped by December 2018. The final price after this Kickstarter campaign will be around $1,500. Links: Kickstarter campaign | Venus Optics Website Are you into macro shooting / photography? Chinese lens manufacturer Venus has announced a new interesting wide-angle lens. The Venus Laowa 15mm f/4 will stand as the widest 1:1 macro lens in production for the full frame format. When discussing macro lenses, one would normally expect something in the 160-150mm focal range, image stabilization with a heavily compressed background. The Venus Laowa 15mm f/4 offers a completely different slant of macro photography/film, enabling a maximum 1:1 magnification ratio on a wide 15mm lens. The result is quite unique; small objects become large in frame whilst still retaining a large amount of background information. Here are some images taken on the Venus Laowa 15mm f/4 (albeit none full at 1:1 magnification ratio): You’ll be exceptionally close to your subject at 1:1, with a minimum working distance of just 0.47cm (perhaps a little too close for some 8-legged hairy subjects). The Venus Laowa 15mm f/4 offers 110 degrees Angle of View on Full Frame, is manual focus only and compatible with the usual suspects of Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony A & FE and Pentax K. Here’s the rest of the specification: Focal Length: 15mm Max Aperture: f/4 Min Aperture: f/32 Angle of View: 110/85 Degrees (Full Frame /APS-C) Shift (For APS-C): +/- 6mm Lens Structure: 12 Elements in 9 Groups Aperture Blades: 14 Min Working Distance: 0.47cm (1:1) Min Shooting Distance: 12cm Max Magnification Ratio: 1:1 Focus: Manual Only Filter Thread: 77mm Dimension: 83.8 X 64.7mm Weight: 410g Mounts: Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony A & FE, Pentax K The above Shift spec refers to a shift mechanism on the rear of the lens that enables fine-tuning for distortion correction. As you can see, both the promo video and images have gone with the consistent theme of nature, particularly small animals or insects as it really offers a unique perspective that would otherwise require extension tubes to achieve. There are plenty of other uses however; enhancing the presence of your foreground with such magnification ratio yet retaining so much background information can help tell your story (AMC’s Breaking Bad utilizes this technique quite a bit throughout the seasons). The lens will come in at a very attractive price point, sub $500 making it a handy tool to have in the kit box. Shipping expected mid to late July this year. via/ Sony Alpha Rumors & Venus
