Sony has introduced the worlds fastest SD card, the SF-G Series with 299MB/s write speed, catering for capturing 4K and high-speed video content. As the demand for higher resolutions, deeper color bit-depth and larger data rates consume the video and film production world, the recording media we use needs constant updating in order to keep up. To meet the demand of increasing media efficiency, less buffer and faster write and read speeds when working in higher resolutions, Sony has introduced the new SF-G series of SD cards. Their new firmware, which allows for write speeds of up to 299MB/s, makes them ideal for capturing large bursts of RAW images for photography, or high-speed shooting in large resolutions. It also makes them, for now at least, the world’s fastest SD card. A memory card reader will also be available that allows for the super-fast read time of up to 300MB/s via USB3, which can dramatically reduce the time needed to ingest the captured files. Sony SF-G Series – the World’s Fastest SD Card The Sony SF-G Series UHS-II SD cards will be available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB sizes, catering for many types of users and cameras in the field of video and filming, including DSLRs, mirrorless cameras like the Sony a7S II or the Panasonic Lumix GH5, but also video cameras like the Sony FS5 that can record both slow motion and 4K, and which demand stable and reliable recording media. What is interesting about this is that Sony cameras typically record X-AVC video files at 50Mbps for 1080p and 100Mbps for UHD 4K. Yes, other cameras will record at 200Mbps, but could this mean Sony has something up their sleeve that would need a write speed of up to 299Mbps? Could this be a hint to a new resolution or format for future cameras? The Sony SF-G series of SD cards will be available in 3 sizes at the end of March of 2017.Read more

Samsung have announced their latest Micro SD Card; the EVO Plus, with a whopping 256GB of storage space. Evo Plus 256GB Announced The EVO Plus 256GB Micro SD Card is the highest capacity memory in its class, offering up to 12 hours of 4K video and over 55,000 photos. The memory card uses Samsungs V-NAND technology providing very high read and write speeds at 95MB/s and 90MB/s, respectively, for high bit rate recording. This could be ideal if you’re shooting a very long timelapse, remote filming with camera traps for wildlife perhaps, or even for aerial cinematography. Samsung have also included waterproofing, temperature proofing (-25°C to 85°C (-13°F to 185°F)), X-ray proof and magnetic proof as part of their ‘4-Proof features’. This means that the card is durable in many filming and photography environments, but take it with a pinch of salt and don’t push it! The last thing you want is to wipe a card—especially a card that comes at a premium! Some of the EVO Plus 256GB cards specs – Up to 55,200 photos Up to 12 hours of UHD (3840×2160) 4K video Up to 33 hours of full HD video (1080) Up to 46 hours of HD video (720) Samsung 4-Proof features 95Mb/s read speed 90Mb/s write speed UHS-1, Class 10, (U3) To top it off, Samsung offers a 10-year warranty on the card, which is great due to its high-end price tag of $249.99. While this announcement will excite readers with deep pockets and a hunger for more storage, it’s unlikely to appeal to the more frugal customers out there. It will be available at the end of June globally. For more information, see the EVO Plus press release. Does the EVO Plus interest you, or does the premium price put you off?
