Cineo has announced a new addition to their mid-power LED lighting range. The Cineo MavX takes all the advantages of the colour-accurate low power/output ratio of remote phosphor technology, now with the ability to tune in color temperature. Cineo has been a big player in remote phosphor technology for sometime. Rather than a traditional LED fixture that relies solely on the light emitting diodes for illumination, RPT (Remote Phosphor Technology) utilizes a phosphor layer that reacts by illuminating when met with high-frequency wavelengths such as the blue LED arrays that Cineo lighting use. Cineo are better known for their HS range, offering fantastic light power/output ratio and color accuracy. Along came the Cineo Maverick sometime after – a smaller mid-power fixture said to match the output of a traditional 1K soft source (if there is such a thing). Like the HS range, you can alter the color temperature of the Maverick by switching out the front panel. However, the newly-announced MavX offers full color-tunability from 2,700k to 6500k, with accurate presets for 3200K,4300K and 5600K. This makes for a very nice and compact, bi-color, colour-accurate fixture. The Cineo MavX is DC powered with AC adaptor, and can therefore run off batteries and mains; V-lock and Gold Mount battery plates are available. It can be controlled via DMX for brightness and color, is completely flicker-free in operation and has a 150° light spread. Furthermore to its features list is its SmartPower Control during battery operation. It has the ability to run at a consistent light output level as the voltage of your battery decreases, meaning your light source will not change in brightness over the course of a battery cycle. This is proper information that goes beyond comparing the fixture to “the output of a traditional 1K soft source”: From this, I can actually compare it to other fixtures. For example, against a Litepanels Astra (another DC powered, high output, bi-color, soft LED fixture), the MavX falls a little short in terms of output, but it’s a trade off for better color accuracy.Read more

Cineo Lighting has announced their next Remote Phosphor Technology lamp. The HS2 now features an inbuilt power supply with new DMX and remote controllable digital display. The original TruColor HS caused a bit of splash on announcement; one of the few filmmaking companies to utilize remote phosphor technology. Check out the science of it here, in a nutshell an array of blue LEDs hit a layer of phosphor that produces light, changing the phosphor plate produces different kelvin temperatures. The result is a light that produces very high luminance at reduced draw and heat compared to other lighting formats, not to mention very accurate colour rendition with exceptional CRI throughout the range. The Cineo HS2 features a new power supply, physically smaller in size that now fits on the back of the lighting unit. The old system was a separate unit much the same as a ballast is to a HMI. Inclusive of the power unit is a new digital display controller: “The RDM450 is smaller and lighter weight than the legacy DTZ450 power supply and features completely re-designed electronics for improved reliability. Other new features include digital display and control, remote programming via RDM, both, and fine dimming, smooth dimming and strobe capability. The RDM450 can be attached directly to the HS2 head for one-piece operation or operated remotely up to 300 feet from the fixture.” The HS2 is a very well built one-piece fixture, featuring 80/20 mounting slots on the sides for easy mounting to the yoke and other accessories. It has a new and improved hinged top to access the phosphor panels for quick one-handed switch outs. The size, weight, and output are identical to the legacy HS fixture. The Cineo HS developed an industry nickname of the ‘Holy S**t’ due to its fantastic brightness output to power draw. Having used one on set in the past I can say they’re an impressive fixture, absolutely no flicker at high frame rates and 500W bares no correspondence to its output when comparing to a tungsten or HMI fixture. The HS2 builds on this success making the overall package more refined and easier to use; a self-contained lamp and power supply will much improve its function on set. What exactly is a remote phosphor LED light? Well, remote phosphor technology is an elegant solution to one of the biggest problems to plague LED lighting technology; how to produce a wide spectrum white light and achieve a high color rendering index for accurate color rendition. Let’s start at the beginning. The Light Emitting Diode A LED is a solid state pn-junction diode which emits light, a light emitting diode. The first commercial LED’s emitted infra red light and were available in 1962. The wavelength (color) of the light emitted from a LED is directly related to the energy band-gap of the semiconductor. For this reason, a LED emits only a single wavelength of light. This is not important for an indicator lamp, or a segmented numeric alarm clock display, but it is critically important if you want to use LED’s to create any kind of light source with a wide spectrum. The first visible wavelength LED’s were red, followed by orange and yellow, and then green emitting LED’s. The final piece of the puzzle in the quest for a RGB LED that can produce any color was the blue LED, that first came about in the 1990’s. The White LED With the invention of the blue LED, the white LED became possible, by coating a blue LED with a phosphor material to convert part of the light to green, yellow and red. The light output of LED’s has risen almost exponentially, with output doubling every 3 years since the 1960’s. Today’s high brightness LED technology has made it possible to produce over 300 lumens per watt. Good CRI (Color Rendering Index) is also possible with these LED’s, now matching or surpassing fluorescents and even approaching incandescent. Remote Phosphor Technology So we know phosphor coatings are used directly on white LED’s to shift the wavelength of some of the blue light to green, yellow and red. A remote phosphor LED light effectively separates this phosphor coating from the LED itself, allowing different phosphors to be interchanged in a light housing. This allows color temperature to be changed simply by slotting in a different phosphor. The result is a high CRI white light with very stable characteristics over time as the phosphors are not subject to heat degradation since they are separated from the LED’s. Some of the best LED lighting on the market right now is based on remote phosphor technology, and those made by Cineo Lighting are second to none. Chimera have made some excellent softbox lightbank kits for Cineo panels such as the Truecolor HS and the Maverick that further help diffuse and shape the light. Below is an image shot of the shuttle crew for mission STS-125 who repaired the Hubble Space Telescope, shot by Michael Soluri with lighting by Cineo and Chimera. With efficiencies rising, now we are seeing high output remote phosphor LED panels with CRI’s rated up to 97/98 such as the Cineo Lighting Truecolor HS which is capable of 700lx @ 3m, outperforming popular fluorescents such as the Kino Flo Diva Lite by a factor of two. The smaller Cineo Lighting Maverick is a fantastic portable solution delivering up to 248lx @ 3m. It is weatherproof and lightweight. Another example I want to mention is Photon Beard’s PhotonBeam 80 LED fresnel, which outputs the equivalent of a 400W tungsten redhead but is easily battery powered and is compatible with traditional redhead accessories. LED’s are definitely here to stay, and with current and future innovations, power outputs will continue to increase and we will see more light panels and fresnel lamp heads powered by remote phosphor technology.
