Sigma 20mm F/1.4 - This Stunning Full Frame Lens Costs $899

Sigma has done it again. After introducing their really successful “art” lens line that offers superb image quality and extreme aperture speeds at wide angles, here’s a big big stunner: The Sigma 20mm F/1.4 “Art” is not only extremely wide, but also extremely fast.

Forgive my excitement about this lens. But a full-frame, 20mm wide-angle with an F-stop of 1.4 is something many filmmakers have been looking for including myself. Lowlight power is one thing, but then the aesthetics of shallow depth of field is an effect that is rarely seen on wide shots and certainly adds production value.

Interestingly this announcement comes only 2 days after Zeiss have released their 28mm Otus F/1.4 lens that is also an extremely fast wide angle, but likely set at a much higher price-point that hasn’t been announced yet.

Previous models of the Zeiss Otus line cost $3,990 and $4,490. One must certainly mention that the Zeiss Otus line is aimed at perfect image quality and not a broader audience like the Sigma Art.

Apparently the Sigma 20mm F/1.4 Art quality is in line with the other “art” series lenses. From the Sigma press release:

…the lens design includes both “F” Low Dispersion (FLD) and Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass to significantly reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, as well as limit distortion for clean, sharp, and evenly illuminated imagery

The Sigma 20mm F/1.4 Art Lens will offer autofocus which can be essential for wide angle applications like gimbal and steadicam shots without remote follow focus devices.

Imagine this lens on a Sony FS7 with a Speedbooster. This will give you an F/1.0 speed wide angle lens and the full-frame look. Needless to say we are very eager to test this lens. It will be available in mid November. Pre-Order Here.
