Samyang Release APS-C Ultra Wide Lens - 10mm f/2.8

Samyang has extended its line with release of a new lens designed for the APS-C format. The 10mm f2.8 is a rectilinear lens, becoming the widest none fish-eye lens Samyang currently produce.

That’s considering the APS-C format; the 14mm f/2.8, Samyang’s full frame equivalent has a slightly wider angle of view at 114˚, with the 10mm f/2.8 coming in close at 109.5˚.

The 14mm has some issues however; on full frame it produces some apparent moustache distortion. This problem that can be resolved in a photo after some tweaking, but a very difficult trait to correct for video.
Hopefully this is down to the complexion of creating such a wide-angle lens for full frame, and will not migrate to the new 10mm f/2.8 also. The 14mm f/2.8 performs much better on APS-C so we have this to maintain optimism.

The 10mm f/2.8 has 14 elements in 10 groups including 2 aspherical AS lenses and 1 ED (extra-low dispersion) lens; like all Samyang lenses it is manual focus only. Unlike the 14mm, the 10mm f/2.8 has a removed petal hood; we saw this in the revision of the 8mm cine lens Samyang produce also.

The above AD and ED acronyms help contribute to the long-winded official name – the Samyang 10mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS CS.
Expanding the name further, the CS stands for cropped sensor (APS-C) and the NCS is in reference to Samyang’s latest anti-flare coating called Nano Crystal Anti-reflection Coating System.

The lens is currently listed on Samyang’s site as being compatible with the following mounts: Canon EF, Canon M, Sony A and E mount, Pentax, Samsung NX, Fujifilm X-Mount, and Nikon (AE). Unlisted on the official site but mentioned on a few rumor sites is a native Micro Four Thirds (MFT) version of this lens also.

The lens is predicted to retail at 508€ (US price no doubt cheaper) and will be expected January 2014.
