Samyang AF 45mm f/1.8 FE

After the Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE and the Samyang AF 24mm f/2.8 FE, here finally comes a “standard” lens for every photographer and filmmaker:  the Samyang AF 45mm f/1.8 FE. Well, it is not exactly a standard 50mm lens, it is a little bit wider, but according to Samyang “45mm is the new gold standard when it comes to field-of-view, providing the 53-degree angle that most naturally fits the human field of vision.”

All Samyang AF lenses for Sony cameras are rather small, lightweight, and compact. This new AF 45mm f/1.8 is no different at just 5.6cm long for a weight of 162g (without hood and front cap). The lens consists of 7 elements in 6 groups, with two aspherical lenses (to minimize chromatic aberrations) and one extra-low dispersion glass element. Indeed, the lens receives an Ultra Multi-Coating to reduce flare and ghosting when working in severe lighting conditions.

The AF 45mm has nine diaphragm blades that should give you a nice round pleasing bokeh. But, it is not the brightest lens out there with a maximum aperture of f/1.8. Also, if you need a faster lens, Samyang has the AF 50 mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC which is more substantial, bulkier, and more expensive.

The lens is compatible with all E-mount cameras, and it covers full-frame sensors. The minimum focusing distance is 45cm. Samyang claims that they “enhanced Auto Focus speed with superior resolution.” Of course, manual focus override is also available if you want to take control over your focus.

Pricing and Availability

The Samyang AF 45mm f/1.8 FE retails for $399, the lens hood is included, and it will be available this month. You can already preorder it. In terms of comparison, the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 retails for $198, and the SLR Magic Cine II 50mm f/1.1 is a manual lens but it is $329.
