REVORING – the Variable Step Ring Adapter now on Kickstarter

REVORING is a new variable step ring filter adapter from H&Y. It features an innovative mechanism that eliminates the need for multiple filters or step-up rings. The adapter includes blades that form a retractable diaphragm and can, therefore, be mounted on various thread diameters – from 37 to 95mm. REVORING is available either as a standalone ring or in a set with VND and Circular Polarizer set in a Kickstarter campaign now.

One of the most essential accessories when filming with a DSLR or mirrorless camera is a good ND filter. Because these cameras lack internal ND filters, the light entering the sensor needs to be limited in a different way. Most filmmakers use screw-in circular front filters.

Working with such filters can get problematic, however, when changing lenses with different filter thread diameters. Sure, there are step-up rings, but one company claims they can do it better.

Founded in Hong Kong in 2006, H&Y is focusing on camera filter systems and accessories. The company’s latest new product is the REVORING, which is available now in their Kickstarter campaign. Let’s take a closer look at the product.

REVORING Variable Filter Adapter

REVORING is a variable filter adapter that eliminates the need for multiple filter sizes or step-up rings. The key to its design is its innovative, retractable, and variable diaphragm. It comprises of multiple springs-mount blades and allows the REVORING to make 1 filter applicable to multiple lenses.

The adapter has been manufactured entirely from 6063 aluminum and finished in a matte black anodized coating to be protected from adverse weather conditions.

There are currently three sizes available:

  • Adapter for lenses with 37 – 49mm filter thread, provides 52mm screw-in filter thread
  • Adapter for lenses with 46 – 62mm filter thread, provides 67mm screw-in filter thread
  • Adapter for lenses with 67 – 82mm filter thread, provides 82mm screw-in filter thread

This fourth size might be unlocked as a stretch goal on Kickstarter if the campaign progresses and reaches a specific level of backing.

  • Adapter for lenses with 82 – 95mm filter thread, provides 95mm screw-in filter thread

REVORING VND Circular Polarizer Filter

Furthermore, H&Y offers the REVORING in a set with the variable neutral density & circular polariser combination filter. The filter offers a wide range of ND3 to ND1000, which roughly equates to a minimum of 1.5, through to 10 stops of light control. The Circular Polarizer section of the filter has been made with Japanese Nitto polarizing film which, according to H&Y, offers up to 99.9% polarizing efficiency.

The German Schott B270 glass used on the filter includes Anti-Reflective coating to suppress flare and reflections. Anti-Fingerprint & Waterproof Nano-Coating Technology has also been applied to the filter to preserve the glass from unpredictable factors.

There is a hard stop at the MAX point shown on the filter ring, restricting the movement of the VND filter beyond the maximum 10 stops (ND1000). The VND and CPL positions can be controlled via a guide fitted to the VND frame filter.

Laser markings on the outer edge of the VND ring will be calculated and applied based on the maximum focal length before any crossfade appears. There will be a chart available on the H&Y website offering guidance with a variety of lenses and sensors.

Pricing and Availability

As I mentioned, H&Y decided to use crowdfunding for the launch of REVORING. The Kickstarter campaign has been launched today and it will run for 40 days till August 8, 2020.

When it comes to pricing, the rewards start at $23 for the smallest REVORING adapter and go up to $149 for the largest REVORING adapter and VND-CP filter set.

After the Kickstarter campaign is over, REVORING will retail between $35 and $45 and REVORING Variable Neutral Density + Circular Polarizer combination will retail between $184 – $239.

We are saying this at the end of every crowdfunding-related article: please be aware of the risks when baking a project on a crowdfunding platform. Please read Kickstarter’s terms of use – especially Section 5, “How funding works”. Keep in mind that there can be significant delays when delivering the product. Some products even don’t get delivered at all. However, we have these filters already in house and are testing them and it’s safe to say that this is absolutely a brilliant product that is really produced in a high quality – my colleague Nino Leitner is raving about the quality of the glass (which is not the case for all NDs on the market) and the idea of the variable step ring itself too.

What do you think about the REVORING Variable Filter Adapter? Do you use step-up rings with your filters? Let us know in the comment section underneath the article.

I don’t understand those filter diameters, except the 52mm. I bought all 77mm filters and then cheap step-down rings for all my smaller lenses. This works quite well. They only cost a few bucks each, and all fit together in a thin pouch.

77mm is a common lens (and filter) diameter, but none of these rings take 77mm filters. What’s up with 67 & 82mm? I don’t see the point of three different versions of this thing with relatively narrow ranges.

I really want to get this. But two things are stopping me. One is major to me, the other is a nice to have:
1. Major: are stops clearly defined? I love my polor pro filter because it has all stops of ND clearly defined so I can be accurate in my application of ND. Most cheap VNDs just have markings that are not accurate to the stop of ND at that point.
2. Nice to have: i wish that the ring of the VND was a bit thicker and could get a gear wrapped around it for VND focus pullers! Especially being this high quality and vnd from 1.5-10 stops and it is supposed to have hard stops!

It doesn’t look like there is any way to attach a lens hood to stop light spill. That is my concern.
