パナソニックがハリウッドで行われたCineGearで新しいシネマカメラAU-EVA1を発表した直後に、ソニーは、フルフレームの36x24mmセンサーを使用するハイエンドのCineAltaカメラを開発中であることを発表した。
これにより、ソニーは、フルフレームセンサーをハイエンドのシネマカメラに採用する最初のデジタルシネマカメラメーカーとなる。キヤノンの5D Mark IIが最初にフルフレームビデオカメラとして使われて以来、多くのカメラマンが期待していたことだ。
ソニーは開発中とするカメラの詳細やリリース時期、あるいは価格を発表しなかった。発表では、そのカメラは「全く新しいもの」ということで、既存のラインナップとは何の関係も持たないと述べている。また、F65のようなハイエンドカメラを補強するのではなく、全く新しい観点から開発されるとのこと。
この動きは、フルフレームセンサーをカバーするシネマ用レンズを開発するレンズメーカーにも新たな決断を促すものになるだろう。ZEISSのようなメーカーは、以前からフルサイズのレンズをラインアップしているが、そうでないメーカーもある。フルサイズのシネマカメラが勢力を拡大する時代が来れば、どのレンズメーカーもその方向を目指すことになるだろう。
映画の未来はより大きなセンサーサイズに向かっていることは明らかだ。ARRI 65や富士フイルム、あるいはハッセルブラッドのような中判カメラのメーカーも、中判カメラにビデオ機能を搭載し始めており、大きなセンサーでビデオを撮る方向を後押しするだろう。この動きは、今後のビデオ業界の方向を決め、変革していくことだろう。
