Kinefinity 8K Camera Prototype, SDI-Compatible EVF, and the KineOS 8.0 Firmware Update Announced

Just in time for NAB 2024, Kinefinity has made three announcements – a new 8K camera prototype, a new SDI electronic viewfinder with a full-HD 0.7” Micro-OLED display, and a firmware update that features uncompressed RAW, wide gamut based on Rec.2020, and an enhanced user interface. That’s a lot to unpack, so let’s look at the details!

Established in 2012, Kinefinity has become a notable player in the film and broadcast sector. Their lineup includes cinema cameras such as the MAVO Edge 6K, the MAVO Edge 8K, and the MAVO mark2 series, all backed by the KineOS operating system. Now they have announced an 8K camera prototype at NAB 2024.

Showcasing the new 8K camera prototype

The 8K prototype is being shown at NAB 2024 and features will include an advanced 8K CMOS sensor enabling significantly faster frame rates and capturing full-frame 4K at 130fps. The SDI module has been redesigned with 12G-SDI compatibility and offers three independent outputs with Genlock for Virtual Production. The camera’s advanced color science guarantees wide gamut compliance with Rec.2020. In addition, the uncompressed RAW codec will enable full-frame 4K RAW recording.

SDI-compatible electronic viewfinder

Kinefinity is introducing an SDI-compatible EVF that will work with most professional cinema cameras. The Full-HD 0.7″ Micro-OLED screen displays a variety of video signals including 3G or 1.5G SDI formats like 1080p, 1080i, or 1080psf. The 10-bit processor supports a wide gamut of 16 million colors, translating to high contrast, true blacks and grays, and fine detail reproduction. There is a built-in diopter in the high-resolution, premium eyepiece that can be adjusted from -6D to +2D.

There is no fan and minimal power consumption, so the EVF’s operation is virtually noise-free. Additionally, there is a zero-delay feature for real-time framing and focusing. The mounting system is versatile, with ARRI rosette and Movcam quick-lock options. Additionally, the software tools offer functions like Luma Waveform, Peaking, Histogram, False Color, and SDI Metadata. As far as weight goes, Kinefinity claims it is 40% lighter than any other EVF on the market.

KineOS 8.0 Firmware update

The Beta version of Kinefinity’s latest firmware update for MAVO Edge and MAVO mark2 cameras will be showcased at NAB:

• Introduces uncompressed RAW (DNG file format) with metadata to provide enhanced image quality and streamline workflow in post-production.
• Offers support for FF 4K RAW and targets 4K 120fps recording.
• Enhances color processing when using ProRes encoding, standardizing the wide gamut based on Rec.2020, offering compatibility with KineLOG3 or HLG Gamma, and ensuring color accuracy and consistency across Kinefinity cameras.
• Now offers customizable buttons and a more user-friendly interface, with improved notifications and dialogue styling for a better overall experience.
