Atomos Coiled HDMI Cables

Earlier in the year, Atomos announced that they would be delving into the cable market to produce HDMI cables made specifically with recording externally in mind. Now, a good selection of coiled HDMI cables are available, ranging from micro to full sized HDMI.

Atomos coiled HDMIThere’s a couple of factors when considering a good HDMI cable for when recording externally.

-Connection

-Length

-Thickness/Weight

If the connection of the lead is too loose, you will drop signal and your external recording will be ruined.

If the length of the cable is too long it will get in the way of your rig, tangle up with other components and could lead to signal drop.

If the cable is too heavy or thick, it can have a strong influence over the cable, again leading to signal drop.

Atomos’ own brand HDMI cables tackle nearly all of those points. Their connections are snug, made ever so slightly bigger to enable a firm connection with the cable and camera/recorder.

They are also all coiled, so the length of the cable is flexible yet not too long as to be intrusive.

The above two points almost make up for the fact that they are still a fairly thick sized cable; But as a self confessed cable geek I still want to see an ultra thin coiled HDMI lead!

The cables at present come in two lengths, 30cm and 50cm. A mixture of full sized, mini and micro HDMI connectors are available, with the addition of some right angle connectors; these are great for the camera side as it takes further strain off the point of contact between the device and cable.

Popular choices will be to the Right Angle Micro Atomos coiled HDMI_2to Full Size HDMI which will go well with the likes of the Panasonic GH4 and Sony A7S.

And the Full Size HDMI to Full Size HDMI which will go well with the likes of the Canon C100.

Of course, we wouldn’t be obsessing over the smaller details of a HDMI lead if camera manufacturers stopped using a frankly inadequate peripheral for transferring professional video signals. Camera manufacturers, please filter down SDI into your pro-consumer cameras ASAP!
