Atomos AtomX SDI Module for Ninja V

Earlier this month, we already talked about the Atomos AtomX SDI module for the Ninja V recorders. During NAB 2019, we had the opportunity to speak with Atomos’ CEO Jeromy Young about the first module released for the Ninja V.

SDI Module – First AtomX Module Available

The Atomos Ninja V is a compact and powerful monitor/recorder with a lot of useful built-in monitoring tools and a plethora of available recording formats – including ProRes RAW, but only via HDMI. And the only cameras that output RAW via HDMI so far are the Nikon Z 6 / Z 7 (explained here). The AtomX SDI module, however, will add SDI input and output to the Ninja V, yet without the possibility to record RAW via this connection (for example by using a Sony FS5, FS7 or Panasonic EVA-1 – you will still need a Shogun 7 or Shogun Inferno to record ProRes RAW from these cameras.)

The SDI module features two 12G SDI ports. The ports are bi-directional: they are not only In and Out ports. You can set them to fit your needs, may it be dual-link SDI in, one as SDI In and the other as SDI out, and even as two separate SDI inputs if you need to switch between the two signals. Otherwise, one thing the AtomX SDI module can’t do is cross-convert your HDMI input and output it through an SDI port.

In terms of resolutions, you can record up to 4K60p or up to 2K240p via the SDI module in Apple ProRes or Avid DNx formats. The AtomX SDI module is firmware upgradeable through the Ninja V. So, additional features like cross-conversion may be added in the future. The same NP style battery powers the Ninja V and the SDI module.

Pricing and Availability

The AtomX SDI module will be available next month for $US199 / €195 plus taxes. New AtomX modules – Sync and NDI – should follow shortly for $149 /€145 for the Sync module and $195 / 195€ for the NDI module.

Atomos – please release the Ninja V that actually records raw. This would be the ideal light weight combo with the FS5 when needing RAW.

Sorry meant to say – Atomos – please add an SDI port that actually records RAW.

Got nothing to do with the sdi port. The ninja V doesn’t have enough processing power to decompress and compress the raw signal.

Then how does it manage a RAW signal over HDMI?

And, what about uncompressed RAW over SDI (such as output from EVA1)? Unlike Sony, that wouldn’t require additional decompression, right?

Thanks for the info — but, can it accept the FS5’S raw output for ProRes recording? I don’t care about ProRes RAW, but if I can’t use this to record my FS5’s raw signal to Prores it’s a deal breaker.

From the Atomos FB Page.. looks like FS5 users are screwed. Will have to return unopened unit.

“Atomos Hi Guys, unfortunately the Sony RAW is a compressed raw that requires significant decoding power, power we don’t have in the Ninja V specifically. Shogun has extra room in this specific area and therefore can do the Sony Compressed and decompressed camera RAW with we then encode and pack to ProRes RAW or Prores. If we could have done it we would have! Thanks for your question and happy shooting! – Atomos Team”

Thank you for pointing this out Casey. I had missed this on the Atomos FB page. I am not buying the Ninja V then And I am not buying the SDI add-on. On second thought, The Shibibi release makes sense. Why buy the Ninja V when you can use it for recording? At least, they will get the crowd looking for a 5inch monitor. All this is kinda crazy when I think about it, about the whole picture. BM Raw : Resolve and BM cameras only. Prores Raw : Final cut and a handful of cameras only. Being an FS5 owner, I am kinda disappointed that no 5inch monitor recorder ever made it but that was a risk when buying (though I really thought that would happen because it just makes sense). Now, I would be Adobe, I would but out my own raw because, intros mess, why the hell not? I would be Portkeys, I would bring a 5inch monitor-recorder to the market. I’ll stick with the bulky 7inch Atoms but the next camera might be a Z-cam E2. I believe Atomos might release a Ninja V MKII next years with raw capabilities but that will be too late. Sony and others will have raise the bar. Thanks again.
