Aputure LS 600d – Their Brightest Daylight LED Introduced

The Aputure LS 600d has been revealed at IBC 2019, showcasing the prototype capable of 600W output, Aputure’s brightest light to date.

Note: We apologise for the slightly distorted audio, we were using a replacement microphone system.

Lighting technology moves faster every year, and Aputure are on top of their game when it comes to COB lighting. In the pursuit of greater, more efficient lighting fixtures they have given us a sneak preview of the upcoming 600d, daylight LED COB light.

An LED HMI For Your Productions

The Aputure LS 600d will be the brightest single source LED light available, rated at 600W output (720W draw) the fixture can fill an entire room at maximum power, and close to double the light output of the 300d II.

Unlike large and hot HMI lights, the 600d can be modified with domes, softboxes or egg crates. To take advantage of the brighter LED, larger barndoors and Fresnel lenses will become available to further modify the light beam.

Built In Effects and Control Ecosystem

Effects and 5-pin DMX are built into the ballast; strobe, lightning and paparazzi are three of the available effects, as well as custom ‘S’ curves for dimming that can be created and adjusted via DMX.

The Aputure LS 600d can also be controlled by the Sidus Link App, enabling seamless integration in the control ecosystem alongside the 300d II.

New cooling technology enables the on board fan to run very quietly, this can also be controlled for when silent operation is required on set.

Aputure aims to halve the size of the battery and control box, which currently takes 4 x 14.4 V-mount or Gold-mount batteries. In the future version of this battery box, Aputure will have two dual-voltage battery plates; 14.4V for 50% power or 28.8V for 100% power.

If you plan to power the device from the mains, it accepts 48V DC input. A a step-up converter can be used in conjunction with 14.4V batteries to enable 100% power.

The Aputure LS 600d really packs a punch from seeing it first hand, unfortunately as the fixture is still in the prototype stage there is no price available yet. Aputure are aiming to have the light ready to buy in Q1/February 2020 or before NAB 2020.

Would you want an Aputure LS 600d for your video and film productions? Are you considering moving away from large, hot lights with bulbs or HMI’s to use LED lighting? Let us know in the comments.

Seems to be some issue with the audio on that video

It’s low and muffled, impossible to hear what’s being said

That’s hilarious from a page that review audio gear. Also the audio guy forgot the microphones on Tentacle E video.

The reason could be one of:
They hire a new audio guy that’s now nothing about audio.
The audio guy was out on a party the whole night and has a really hangover.
IBC is in Amsterdam, maybe the audio guy went to a coffee shop and smoked weed.

“Unlike large and hot HMI lights, the 600d can be modified with domes, softboxes or egg crates.“

I’m sorry, but you kind of toss your credibility out the window making that statement. Chimera even has a line of soft boxes specifically designed for HMI’s.

Is it journalism about to be seceptial to what people say? Everyone thats been on a film production and intresserd in light equment have se HDMI with some kind of modifers it’s very common.

Yeah agreed Chimera has softboxes specifically designed for high temper tungsten and HMI lights for a while now, and if you only ever use chimeras you’re golden. Conversely though, the Bowens mount does allow access to a wider range of traditional photography modifiers like 5 or 7 foot Octas and umbrellas, with more options and better price points. HMIs can’t be used with as many.

Plus you probably need to worry somewhat about the heat coming from a 720W power draw fixture so as to not melt your modifiers. Not as much as from a tungsten light, obviously, but my 150W COB has melted gels that came too close to the COB. LEDs are cooler, not heatless.

Seems like people have never heard of Mole Richardson’s LEDs with for example 1500 Watts:

It’s true the Mole Tener is a bright Single Source LED lighting fixture. There’s no doubt about that. But the design of the Mole, especially with the Varicolor is likely done using CSP chips instead of one large COB. That’s 1) a lot easier to design, 2) theirs is massive and has a lot of fans 3) the efficiency from the LEDs of the same wattage is lower than that of a single COB, 4) because of how LEDs work with Fresnels you can’t get as hard shadows with a giant fresnel like you can with a bare COB or reflector.

That said, if the big fresnel look is what you’re going for and you have the capacity to carry it around and use it, it’s a great light. I’ve used it before and it gave me exactly what I needed. I’d recommend 2 people carry it around instead of just one though, because the barn doors accidentally fell out and hit and sprained my wrist. The 600d is also a Bowens mount single source so it’s a bit more easily modifiable.
