12bit RAW vs 8bit – There’s power in the pixels

November 19th, 2012 Jump to Comment Section

This is something worth sharing that I missed out on posting.

Marco Solorio of OneRiver Media looked closely at what the (yet to be delivered) Blackmagic Cinema Camera can do.

If you don’t have much experience with higher bitrates than 8bit, and haven’t seen this you should check it out.

In this video he focuses on how 12-bit RAW compares in relation to 8-bit alternatives, including many camera solutions costing much more. The difference between “perceived dynamic range” and “available dynamic range” is explored in detail. Also covered is day-for-night, detail versus sharpness, and much more.

For best results, view this video in FULL 1080 HD, and even better yet, download the original 15Mbps H.264 file with less compression artifacts (VIMEO LINK).
