Really interesting Red vs. 5D2 vs. GH1

Really interesting Red vs. 5D2 vs. GH1

Somone posted this really interesting clip intercutting Red, 5D2 and GH1 footage on dvxuser.com. Amazingly, it's pretty seamless once they are all graded together.

I suggest putting piece of paper in front of the captions telling which camera is which for your first viewing... you'll be surprised.

A good example of it's more about the Indian than the arrow!

Keep in mind that's RED at 3k not 4k, and an UltraPrime on the GH1. Not really level playing field.

I think the GH1 footage is the most impressive because of the lens in front of it. The 5D looked the weakest, but probably the most efficient in low light. It just shows that people are more accepting of mixed formats these days. Thanks reality TV!

And cranking the 5D to ISO 2500 vs. Panasonic's ISO 400. Yeah, that's a fair comparison. Next time line 'em up, same t-stops, same focal length in a bay shooting a chart - you'll see how freaking awesome the Canon CMOS chip really is.

I think the biggest issue with the MarkII were the 30p to 24p conversion artifacts. That's how I could spot the 5d2 footage even with the caption covered. Otherwise, it gets pretty tricky to tell them apart without playing the footage frame by frame.

Having played casually with a GH1 and a 5d2 side by side for an afternoon, it seemed that the ISO ratings on the GH1 were underrated compared to the MarkII. Meaning that at the same f-stop, to get a similar exposure, the MarkII had to have a higher ISO setting.

And to do a "fair" comparison, you need to put a lens twice as wide on the GH1 than on the 5D2, to get the same FOV from both cameras. Then, if you want to match the shots completely, you need to open up the lens on the GH1 a couple stops to get the same DOF on the wider lens (or close the MarkII a couple stops...).

By then, the ISO advantage of the MarkII became not that obvious.

I love you guys. I saw nothing wrong in that clip but graininess on the RED. Everything else looked fine. I bet it's so constricting to see the world as an expert. I'm glad I don't know enough to notice.

This is really an amazing video. The filmic looks (mostly), the grading, the acting and editing. Very very nice. Where's the creator?
