DIY 7D Shoulder Rig DONE!

DIY 7D Shoulder Rig DONE!

Postby Rizzice on 27 Jan 2010 21:52

Hey guys.. just finished my shoulder rig for my Canon 7D finally!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/46248400@N ... 297031010/

The rig is made out of PVC mostly and a bunch of screws, as well as some superclamps from B&H and a nice manfrotto sliding QR.

It really turned out nicely, it's incredibly stable, and not front-heavy thanks to the cweight on the back, I can't even tell IS from no IS when I'm using the thing, it was quite successful. I also made an attachment for a 2nd handle as pictured below, for when I'm looking for even more stability.

I can also get some test footage if anyone is interested. Anyway, let me know what you think!

Supplies were PVC, PVC glue, saw, wood, table saw, drill, zipties, screws, nuts, and super clamps, pretty much.

All it is is 1/2" PVC, with 3/4" PVC connectors for the handle/shoulder pad. Shoulder pad is made out of 3/4" PVC. With the right connectors, you can make a lot of different shapes, and then just kind of get creative from there.

The sliders for the handle/shoulders are just connected by 3/4" T connectors with a 3/4" pvc glued inside (to create an "H" shape) so they fit and slide along the 1/2" rails freely. The connectors had holes drilled into them so I could screw in the fastening (just screw in a screw holder, then put in thumb screws to make tightening possible). Big drill for one H section for the handle, and 4 drill holes in the shoulder H to attach via 2x zip ties for each shoulder rest.

Grip taped a metal slab for the CW and then ziptied, but the rest is all pretty self-explanatory!

The hardest part was the center piece, which is just 2 superclamps attached by a wooden board that I screwed to both, which I then attached the QR plate to.

For the shoulder attachment, once you have your two shoulder PVCs, before putting on the foam, drill four holes on each side of the T section as well as in each, and then you can attach them via zip ties.

I've uploaded more pics onto the flickr link!

That's awesome, makes the $$$ I spent on a Red Rock seem a bit pricey!

Luckily I don't live in london then xD

I don't think it looks any more "dangerous" than the rigs you can buy from RR/etc, though, to be honest.
