Buy the infamous dent puller and a strong ball head. I suggest the Sticky Pod ball head because it's made for a real car mount.

Then just drill and hole through the middle of the dent puller and but a 1/4 machine bolt through it and screw it in to the ball head on the other side. And you have a instant $40 car mount.

Wow! I've never seen this gizmo before... "dent puller" returns a lot of results: is there a particular brand that is proven in the field?

Worth noting that as with all these camera mount systems is it ALWAYS important to have a backup! Be sure to strap your camera to at least two sturdy points high on the vehicle. That way, if the sucion fails you may lose your shot, but the camera will just slide around on the hood until you can pull over. This may or may not save your gear, but it will defnitely save the windshield of the car behind you.

AS fate would have it, I found two of these things in a bin at the local "Liqudation world" store for $5.99 Picked them both up. What a frighteningly good suction mount, you could seriously life a huge amount of weight with these things. Does anyone have photos of them being used as a camera mount? I just need some confidence....

I would also add some safety backup plan before relying on a cheap suction cup to secure thousands of dollars of camera gear to a moving vehicle...

I've used these with really great results:

The nice thing about the pump action is that there is a line that lets you know the relative suction pressure. When its properly attached the marking is obscured, if the seal is leaking then you see the line before the cup lets go.
