Sorry Captain Jack Sparrow, aint nothing inferior about the video quality.

"FF" does not make the photographer, and VistaVision does not make the cinematographer.

This is very frustrating. I find it hard to believe that canon can't make the 5D do the frame rates we all want. I seriously doubt that there is any hardware limitations that people have been saying, it's all logistics for them right now IMO... $$$$$... They need to honor the loyal customers. Simple as that. If they don't, then it's time to say goodbye to canon and wait for scarlet. I am starting to think i should have done that in the first place...

Agreed, it's a shame, it seems the goal is to overtrump other's competitors instead to care for own customers, it's a shame canon

message to CANON management

I can't believe you put all this features into the 7D and leave the 5D2 people in the lurch

message to CANON management

... yes, the day comes to say goodbye...

I am a wannabe filmmaker/photographer looking for lowbadget HD capabilities that can compete with the big toys - and have been drooling over the 5d2 for a while - almost ready to buy, but now the big guys have just dropped the bombs, 7D, A850, D300s as well as a few others in the panny and casio departments.... NOW WHAT!!!???

5D enthusiasts!! please put aside your annoyance, bias etc.. what do I do?

I fell in love with the 5d2 for its full frame, interchangeable lens beauty - but hated the frame rate, focus, finicky firmware hacks, and audio... sounds to me the 7D has alot less cons - namely audio and FF DOF. Plus I could buy 2 for the same price as the 5D2 which adds multicam for the price.

WHAT IN THE 9 RINGS OF * DO I DO NOW??

Something tells me 1 month of patience to wait for the tech heads to go and buy one of each and set up a 7d fan site - or not, so i know what next - Plus the scarlets been lurking around the corner for goodness knows how long, and if red are ever gonna shake the water, nows the time to add the Mysterium into the mix otherwise it just may not be that impressive....

Any suggestions?? Is the 5d2 still the way to go, or is it suddenly not the coolest kid on the block.?

You guys crack me up. Just sell your darn Mark IIs and buy a 7D and stop crying. Since the 5D2 is still backordered everywhere, you won't have any problems selling it to an eager photog who wants full frame. You might even turn a profit from the swap.

Actually, 5D image quality thumps the 7D, and you can see that in the videos to date. That FF doesn't make the photographer is irrelevant to the fact that the 7D will not give you as a nice an image as the 5D. Fact.

Moving to a 7D, you gain what mainly 24/25p (no guarantee that won't come to the 5D) but you lose IQ and for me that is a poor trade off. I love the texture and feel of stuff from the 5D.

you are interpreting my post quite wrong...I don't like to sell my 5D2 I like to see very soon a firmware update...

I think I understood what you meant. You bought a 30fps-only camera expecting Canon to sprinkle it with magic fairy dust at a later date to give the camera features it did not have when you bought it. For free.

Before the 7D came out, there were two logical explanations for Canon not coming out with 24p in the 5D2:

1- They didn't want to cannibalize the video division
2- Some hardware limitation

The 7D pretty much proves that #1 isn't the case. #2 is the only logical explanation left.

You guys should be thankful that Canon didn't choose to come out with a 1DMkIV with 24p @ 4000$ instead.

Lay off the guy for wanting some basic functionality added by a firmware update, the mk2 is less than a year old and a lower priced model has been introduced with some of this basic functionality, he has every right to feel annoyed, maybe if more people like him spoke up instead of acting like PR spokespeople for Canon then these things would get resolved. It’s a firmware update, sheesh, you act like no other companies add features or functionality down the line when even Canon’s direct competitor Nikon is going to add additional video functionality to previous DSLRs, so what is the big deal with Canon doing the same? You say the only logical explanation is hardware because the 7D has it, well that’s one explanation, but it’s not the only one and I highly doubt it’s the correct one.
