Zoom H4n - Canon 7D... Sync sound with film

Zoom H4n - Canon 7D... Sync sound with film

Postby millerflip on 18 Dec 2009 17:30

I am thinking of buying a Zoom H4n to my Canon 7D. Have read that there are some sync problems with the 5D camera and H4n. Is it the same problem with the 7D? I use Pinnacle Studio Ultimate HD 14 editing software.

You are going to be manually matching up your waveforms in post with your Zoom Audio vs. your camera audio. Use a slate.

This is the best syncing option though for Final Cut Pro users

Definitely use Pluraleyes, its for final cut and vegas. As long as your sequence settings are all good, it will sync the video and audio perfectly. I recently used it to sync a muli-cam shoot with 4 7Ds to a master audio track and it worked fantastically.

The difference between the audio on the 5D and 7D is that the 5D records 44.1 kHz and the 7D 48kHz. 48 is the standard so thats a good thing.

You might be referring to the sync issues when recording for extended amounts of time. Some have had to slow H4n audio to 99% or so. Maybe that's the issue you're thinking?

Yes, that was the problem I had in mind. Did not really know how I would explain it in English.

EDIT : just noticed you are not using Final Cut! Anyway, the above link will still help explain some of the issues involves in syncing audio.

The Canon 5D MkII has a frame rate of 30fps while our 7D's 30p is really 29.97fps which matches the 29.97 timeline of Pinnacle Studio. I have Studio 12.1 Ultimate and use the ZoomH2 without any synch problems. Simply have a visual reference like a slate with clapper or have someone clap hands in front of the talent as you start "rolling".

I edit and trim the audio from the ZoomH2 in Audacity and save to the album folder Pinnacle can find it in, place it on the extra audio track and drag it into waveform peak alignment with the camera's audio. When I get the closest alignment possible I mute the camera's audio track and it works. I generally do this scene by scene so it doesn't have a chance to "drift" if it's going to.
