Wedding in NYC Shot with 7D in 24p

Wedding in NYC Shot with 7D in 24p

Postby joshuabrown on 08 Oct 2009 23:05

hey guys,

I shot a wedding this past weekend with my new 7D.

just put together a quick edit to a song, but will be going back and working with the ambient audio and extending the length.

here are the details:

camera: 7D shot in 24p at 1/50th of a second for the most part except a couple clips where I forgot or it got bumped up. also shot a couple of them at 60p.
lenses: 24 1.4, 50 1.2, 24-105
light: litepanel micro with a warming filter
audio: rode videomic
music: zoe keating
stabilized: with a monopod and a zacuto rapidfire
edited: iMovie 09
weather: the WORST

Anyway, just wondering what you guys thought of it. (except for the audio which will be changing drastically) I have a long way to go on my camera movement techniques.

It was great example if the 7D video. Thanks! I see some jumpiness in the video that is distracting, but that could be Vimeo, or it's hard edits that combined with the movement in the scene create the jump. Overall it looks like you're well underway. Congrats!

Can I ask where you light was mounted? Also, did you shoot your 24 wide open? I'm about the pull the trigger on that lens too, but the DOF was a little disappointing. I REALLY noticed the difference when you got really close to subjects, but like has been posted before, that might be a little unrealistic as you would have to get right in their face. A longer lens might not cut it either. I also noticed like I've seen before, that some of the highlights were a little blown out, and skin tones a little bright, so I'm interested in how I would get that toned down. Once again I'm thinking ND filters but I'd still like to have an idea of your iso and aperture you were using and where in the shots. Thanks so much for posting! :headbang:

P.S. Do you think your Zacuto Rapid Fire was worth the money?

Nice work...$1700 camera....$4500 in lenses...and it shows. Also...a good eye on your part...you shot and edited in way that really conveys the feeling. I'll bet the couple is very happy with it.

Good work!

I bought one of those little brackets at BH which enables me to have the mic and light on the hotshoe.

On the DOF, this is really the biggest disadvantage of the 7D compared to the 5D. I was shooting wide open for most of the day, but the 7D has around 1.5 extra stops of DOF. f4 on the 7D looks like 5.6 or more. I don't understand all the physics of the cropped chip, but this is the main drawback to me.

Thanks Joshua. I agree on the DOF issue. So no filters then? Which shots used the 24 1.4? I think f4 or f5.6 is too much unless you're using a super telephoto. Your 24 1.4 with an ND if you needed it wide open probably would have given you more DOF. It's a FREAKING expensive lens though, so that's why I wanted to know where it was used so I could determine if it's worth getting it or not. Perhaps the 14 2.8L is good enough for wides and I just just jump straight into a 24-70 zoom. The stabilization feature would be nice, especially on a video camera, but more DOF once again. Or make do until the new body comes out with FF and native 24p/60P.

I also agree with David on the mood. I was too critical on the cuts and forgot to give the praise. I was married for 13 years and have been separated/divorced since fall of 2002. Swore I would NEVER get married again, but I must admit I was getting a little misty watching the video. You captured the mood well and even started to melt my cold crusty heart a bit. That is one BEAUTIFUL bride BTW. I better stay away from producing (or watching) wedding videos, or I might end up married again. :wtf:

We get so carried away with the equipment we forget the camera and software are there to convey the message in the script and the director's vision.

I agree 100%. I'd rather watch a great story unfold made on what is considered to be crappy gear than watch a really dull, pointless or poorly executed film that was done on the best equipment money could buy. I'd bet that couple and their family and friends are going to raving about the work you did man. Kudos.

Great video! Just wondering how did you manage to edit 24p in iMovie 09? IMovie does not support 24p, it will convert your 24p to 30p when you import. I'm having this problem too, can't afford FCP at the moment, so iMovie is all I have. Did you figure out some sort of workaround?

Nice Job.

Im a wedding photographer in NJ and always had a huge interest in film making...but not wedding videography. Now that I have a 7D I actually wishing I could shoot movies at the weddings instead of photos :? But I really can't cause Im a wedding photographer! :) But I do sneak in some 7D films here and there.

I have 2 weddings this weekend and for sure will be doing something with the 7D when not shooting stills.
