500D/T1i Manual control trick - 1/60 @ ISO 400, 800, 1600

500D/T1i Manual control trick - 1/60 @ ISO 400, 800, 1600

Postby Kenjee on 01 Aug 2009 00:55

OK guys I need some comfirmation on this experiment.

From our felows from 5DmkII we learned the "twist off" trick for manual apperture selection. I`ll repeat it.

In "M" mode select the F number, press DOF preview and while doing it twist your lens for about 1-2 mm or until you see 00 in F value on your display.
When you`re in Movie mode it will you say that lens is not attached, ignore it, press Record/Live View button and you have your apperture locked.

Now for the part of 1/60 shutter speed at ISO 400, 800, 1600.

Trick is:
While you have your lens in twist off, In Movie Mode you will get "Ensure lens is attached.." screen.

Now when you press Live View/record button immediatly press LOCK or the ISO button. Key is in speed and finger configuration. :)
(Thumb on Live View/Rec and forefinger on Lock/ISO)

You will now have 1/60 and ISO 1600. :) And Allways when you do this procedure.

With compensation (holding Av button and turning main wheel) you will be changing iSO to 800 and 400 while shutter speed will be locked to 1/60.
Don`t be deceived by the Shutter speed values of 50, 40, 30, 25, 20. THEY ARE NOT! Value is still 1/60 (Measured with shutter flicker test with CRT monitor)
This just points that values in display while in full auto are there just for cosmetics. (Nice job canon %$#^%$%#)

So when you are done shooting, your lock will be gone. Stay in Auto, don`t lock or if you locked something press set to unlock. Turn your Dial out of Movie mode and go back repeating the "Speed lock" trick. :)

What does it do actually?

Basically we are locking just when the camera set default values and that is 1/60 and ISO 1600 (When compensation is in Zero)

This still sucks for us in PAL Land and lacking of 100 and 200 ISO, but it can help to control famous 180 shutter speed and with these two tricks we are on something.

OK this must be comfirmed so I ask for help guys, make me happy :)

I was hoping that we are trying to overcome this Canon automatic bu***hit. Our big brothers from 5dmkII did their job.

C`mon people did anyone tested the speed lock trick?

In near future I will be testing it with Vari ND so basically I`ll have camera that is set at 180 shutter and with 400 800 1600 "stocks".

I'd like to try this but I'm confused as to the procedure
As far as I understand what you're saying:

Manually change f# :
1 - Switch to Manual mode
2 - Select desired f#
3 - Untwist lens slightly until camera reads f00

Your steps (including the ones above) :
4 - Switch to Movie mode
5 - Press Record and ISO buttons simultaneously at the "lens is not attached" screen
6 - Hold AV button and move the wheel to adjust ISO.

I tried the above procedure and nothing seems different. Moving the wheel is changing the exposure compensation, which in turn, changes the ISO. This appears normal. I don't find that any of the settings are 'locked in' other than the f#. I used your trick and the ISO still auto-adjusted to the lighting situation.

Hello,

I tried this trick, and can confirm, that it locks exposure to 1/60 (at least this is shown) with iso1600, and with AV + roller it is possible to underexpose down to iso800 and iso400. Can also confirm, the exposure is kept at 1/60 (smoothness of video didn't change)

For me, this is similar behavior, like pointing camera onto some light source, and if exposure is automatically set as wished, lock exposure, and adjust iso with AV + roller. This way it is possible to have 1/60 and iso100. It is good to know this trick, but I still would rather have full manual control from canon :( And I don't want Mark II, I like how small Rebel is.

Regards.

Not simultaneously, just after record, and it will be locked.

Displayed values of shutter speed is actually false, so if we are doing point to bright or dark we still can`t be shure what are the real values.
I`m hoping that this can help with situation when we absolutely need 1/60.

Anyway thanx for help both of you.

And like you said, I also don`t want mkII when this camera have potential.

Ok... I did that but it still reverts to 'auto' whenever there isn't enough light. Moving the wheel adjusts the exposure compensation (again), not the ISO directly.

Is your metering timer set at 30 min? That`s the only thing I can guess.

Ok.. so my metering timer is set to 30 minutes.. but holding down AV and adjusting with the heel still changes the exposure compensation. It does this even without this trick.

OK, you are now able to lock your aperture values with twist off.
With speed lock you are able to lock shutter speed to 1/60
and to change ISO in range of 400 - 1600 WITH exposure compensation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposure_compensation

As I mention, while you compensate you will see all kind of values for shutter speed. They are false. Only thing that you change is ISO.

Exposure compensation EV is also possible with out any trick as you said, but I`ll repeat:
Because of False values in display you can`t be shure of shutter speed true value.

Let me say it clearly, if you have specific need for 1/60 or 180 degree shutter (Film camera language)
and don`t want to hunt it with bright/dark or any other method, this trick can be helpful.
Think of it as "lock default" or "preset" that you have in your hand.
