I have the H2. I generally like the audio from it, but I usually use it up close, as a podcast mic.

I did try it with the 7D, but I think I'm going to play with it a bit more before I venture up a definitive opinion. First of all it has a 1/4" tripod screwhole, but it doesn't mount onto a hotshoe, so you have to rig something up there. (Does the H4 mount directly onto a hotshoe? Just wondering)

I put it on a light stand and positioned it near me while I had the 7D shooting footage, then I compared the two audio sources. What I found is that the 7D camera audio is slightly sharper and allows in more room ambience. The H2 was sitting about three feet away and picked up my voice fine, without room ambience. Comparing the two, the sound from the H2 seemed a bit muffled or dampened compared to the 7D.

But, it may just be the settings I have on the h2. I'll play around a bit more.

On Amazon it gets 4.5 stars out of 5. Same rating as the H4n(though it has 90% more reviews than the H4n). It's half the price. After reading all the reviews of people using it with the DSLRs I guess you get what you pay for. For me it looks like the H4n is much more flexible and handy for film purposes than the H2. Sooner or later I'll be getting one myself.

If you attach the supplied mic clip and slip the unit into a shock mount with a shoe adapter @ the bottom, you'll see it mounts just fine. I use an Azden shock mount, which can be interchanged between the H2 and H4n. The plastic tube unscrews from the metal mount, and with one screw bottom to top, it can hook up to the H4n.

However, as decent as the H2 audio is straight from the unit, if you're using other mics that you want mounted to the shoe then you will need to figure out a rig.

I currently use the H2, its 2 ch, 4 ch surround, metering, not a bad piece of gear.
