Can the 5D MKII dump video to an HD without a computer?

But the hand grip is really expensive so buying some more CF is much more cheaper.

Are there any other solution to store your data from the 5D to a HD ?

Hi,

Is there any news about this topic? I'm curious to know if there is a way to record video directly to a Harddrive either by using the WFT-E4A or any other method.
As far as i know the WFT-E4A is able to record video directly to a harddisk with a max filesize of 4GB (FAT32 max. filesize limitation)

Any news on this would be much appreciated.

Maybe that method for using it as a webcam with the VH Capture drivers/utils would also work for recording elsewhere.

Assuming you have a 1920x1200 or higher resolution screen, you can display the entire frame using a live view app like EOS Util or that open source one, I forget the name. The VH apps simply capture that part of the screen and make it available to other apps as a video source in Windows, that's how you can use it with other apps like those that are looking for USB webcams.

I can't say what effect it might have on quality, colours, etc., but it should work.

I use the NEXTO extreme-this is a stand alone box that houses a sata hard drive -I paid about $100
it has a compact flash slot so you can download your files -stills or video or any file
it has a usb port to move your stuff into a computer and the usb also charges the internal battery
many red camera users use this box since you fill up a compact flash card really fast with the red camera
price does not include a sata 2.5 inch hard drive but they are cheap

Not sure if this would work, but if you have a 2.5 external enclosure and laptop HD inside, with a mini-b 5 pin internal slot on it, is it possible that you can run a mini-b to mini-b cable directly from the camera to the HD and record images and video? If you can, I think that would be a great lightweight storage solution for any hand held rigs/handles. Thoughts?

A CF to USB host cable might work, no?

I can only find USB 1.1 versions though :-|

I've been using battery powered external hard drives with card readers built in for 7 years now for photographic work and I've never lost an image. Now that I have a 5D I may have to upgrade the size of the hard drives, but my normal setup is two cards, one in the camera and the other one copying onto the hard drive in my pocket. You just have to choose a card size that will hold enough images during your most rapid shooting to last you until the other card has finished copying, I got away with two 512 meg cards for my 10D for many years.
