This looks really interesting, so I wanted to share it.
There are also some additional accessories, check the site by yourself: http://dfocussystem.com

I think this could be great for lot of people who are looking for affordable Follow Focus system.
These are the new products that were announced/released:

D|Focus v2
Pro Lens Gear
DSLR mount

D|Focus v2 was announced today, and it looks really good indeed, seems to be improved from "v1". Also the Pro Lens gear announced few days ago looks great (they can even be used with standard FF systems)
And if someone doesn't have or want a rail system, a "DSLR Mount" is offered too. Very cool.

Here are some pics from their website:

I'm excited about this too. I had the V1 on my to-buy list, but the V2 looks so much better, and it's only $20 more. If anyone gets one, please let us know how it works!

The DSLR mount is interesting. With auto focus not practical for video, and the very short focus throw on the lenses, the follow focus is nice, but the rails a bit heavy and complex. This looks like an interesting and lightweight answer to that problem.

I can't help but feel a bit hosed when I buy a D|Focus v1 two weeks ago and now there's a v2 with "improved performance" for the same money. The new gear rings looks 100% better than the wire tie gear thing I'm messing with now and if the new gearbox eliminates all the play that is in the v1 model I just bought, then I feel pretty put off frankly.

I feel for you. I have been through that with computers, software and so many other things I have bought when the next better version comes shortly after. But that is the world we like in. Everything moves fast, evolves and gets updated quickly. Every time I see anything as a V2, V3, mark IV, etc, it reminds me that we are all beta testers to some degree on a product until the next version comes out, ad infinitum.

Dave's a good guy. See if he is willing to send you the updated parts at a slight discount. He might, might not, but worth asking.

I have the DFocus v1, it works fine. I see tiny play, but it does well with RR, dvcity and Cinevate gears.

I'd just e-mail Dave. He may just arrange an exchange if they are the same price. From what I can see customer service and satisfaction is a large part of his business plan.

Hi guys, glad you found the new site!

I am very pleased with the V2. With the original D|Focus all I wanted was a "knob on the side of my camera." But since I started building them I have been tinkering with ways of improving them and the V2 is a result of that tinkering. I'd say the original D|Focus was just a "knob on the side of my camera" while the V2 is an "affordable follow focus solution." I still wouldn't recommend it for professional work, but for consumers / amateurs / hobbyists its probably all you will need.

@mhood - sorry about that! I knew there would be unhappy customers then the new products were announced. Its inevitable that those who have unlucky timing and make a purchase right before a product release get hosed. Apple, with all their secrecy, must get floods of angry emails after every keynote!

I've made it a high priority to keep parts and dimensions standard so they can be upgraded and expanded in the future, hence the V2 upgrade kit. Since you made a purchase recently, shoot me an email (dfocusinfoTHE-AT-SIGNgmail com) and I can work you out a deal on the upgrade.

I would also like to clarify that the V2 allows you to nearly eliminate all backlash. It's not 100%, but its pretty damn good!

My brother and I made a short film recently that I will post using the V2, dslr mount and my GH1 w/ Canon FD primes. I think it came out pretty darn good especially considering the total cost of the camera package is under $1500 including tripod!

Exactly. Several months ago I purchased a Letus Extreme to use with my Canon HF-S100. Its a really nice piece of equipment, but damn heavy. I built a custom rig with 15mm rails to support it but it was just too big and cumbersome for the kinds of things I do. Jehu at jag35.com has always been a fan of simple, lightweight and portable configurations instead of big bulky camera "rigs" and that has rubbed off on me. My GH1 with D|Focus V2 mounted with the DSLR mount weighs less than a 5d2 or 7d body!

Hi Dave, glad to see you here!!

I always like the affordable alternatives, especially for all those (like me) who can't pay really expensive solutions (sometimes really overpriced), and are looking for other options.

I noticed the announcement at your site yesterday, so I thought these products deserved to be mentioned, because I find them really good alternatives.

Also the "DSLR mount" is something new (at least I don't know any other similar solution up to date), and could be really cool (I don't have a rail system, but even in case I had I wouldn't like to carry it all the time when going out with my camera and filming)

I really like what you do, and how you do

Cheers.

Dave,

Would you say your new improved gears are nearly as good as the RedRock ones you used to recommend? They don't need to be 100% as good, just 90% as good at half the price. :) I'm seriously looking at buying this setup, but the odds of me actually doing anything with it is pretty low given my track record for buying new gear and letting it sit. But I'm very interested in getting a rod support system and an external video monitor, but I think I'll start with the FF setup and see if it's something I'll actually end up using. :)
