Footage - Still sequences, fast Motordrive and Twixtor

This is actually a d90 still image - generated film but I thought I'd share it here anyway...

.....
This weekend I bought the d90 remote release and tried out the fast 4.5 fps motordrive on the camera. I shot 2K jpegs at fine quality, then brought it all into AE, and applied the Re:Vision Twixtor plugin to fill in all the missing frames.

Had an interesting effect on motion, when the subject is slow-moving, with fast motion it gets pretty teared up. An interesting surreal effect.

But I must say that in AE, doing a grade on the d90 jpegs, is such a treat compared to attempting to grade d90 AVI footage. And the sharpness of a 2k jpeg is a joy to behold.

So I made this wee short as a test:

THANK's for sharing this.

What a great idea! I love your approach. Let us see the final result when it's done.
Sometimes the motion artifacts get in the way for me. Sometimes they look really cool. Maybe you could get rid of them at some points. I've worked with twixtor and know it's hard to control and takes forever to render. Maybe turning off motion vectors at some points will help.
Looking forward to the finished movie.

Thanks for the comment,
- yeah, I find that when there is a fast motion, twixtor's interpretation is kind of weird... this strange ripply patterning happens. But when its a slow motion... it has a cool stop-motion kind of look.
I guess for the 'final' film I'd stick to actors playing very tiny smooth motions, or have more of a combination of speeds represented...

The first thing I thought: "Wait, is this realtime videofootage? No, wait, yes, wait, no. Wtf!" The wow effect is definitely there, I haven't seen this yet.
I'm also shooting something with stills next week. It's a Tv commercial and I'm dop. We're shooting on the 5D and the new approach of your video reminds me of my new approach in my video. It's gonna be an ultra highspeed motion thing, made of handheld stills which are then tracked in post to create an effect as if you're watching something happen extremely fast from a POV angle, while preserving realtime camera movement. It's hard to explain, but I'll post it here in two weeks or so.

forget the way this is done. i like the film! this is a really cool "test". you really drew me in. I'm trying to understand your brain, I'm trying to figure out what you're trying to figure out. I love the film itself! Please let me see more of your work because you are VERY inspirational. I often have a hard time coming up with shorts i can make all by myself. Here I'm seeing one that can be a pretty cool film.

The film is great man. The surreal effect really goes well with the narrative and the acting. Three thumbs up

Verrrry nice colors... the effect is quite subtle, I expected more hiccups and a more pronunced "warped" look... (for the better!)
The final shot with the closing eyes is especially weird (they close above the actual eyes!!)

Maybe this should be moved to a "Special FX" section, since it wasn't shot on a 5D but is not really "straight film"...
