Soccer - shallow DOF f5.6 and 1/50 in with Fader ND Filter

This is a shoot to test the Fader ND, a variable gray filter, to keep the shutter speed at 1/50 and the shutter at 5.6 all the time in bright sunlight. The white balance is a little screwed up in the first 1 minute. It's also a practice to follow focus and zoom at the same time. Pretty hard but I got better as the shoot progressed. I think. I think the 1/50 gives a good motion flow.

Music Kevin MacLeod. Microphone Rode SVM. Canon 5D mark II. EF 70-200 4L IS. 1/50. f5.6. Neutral picture style. MOV:s converted to Cineform AVI 29.97. Edited and exported to h.264 NTSC 29.97 and uploaded to YouTube. Best to watch it large at YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AosVD0bPxg

You'll find the Fader ND here at Ebay. The seller, Bonifaceleung is professional and the Filter is of good quality.

Monopod and IS on the lens. Hm, more like a dual pod. I stabilize with my mouth against the looking glass attachment as well.

Nice job! The looking glass attachment looks pretty good, and I was wondering about its performance on a sunny day... Also, I will appreciate it if you could provide addtional information on it. Thanks,

Sure thing. I wrote about it a long time ago. People here probably thought I was nuts ... I am the only one using this kind of rig  Would be fun to hear what you think if you go this way.

viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3073

I removed two of the ball links between the magnifying glass and the attachment so that it would be shorter and more steady. The magnifying glass attachment just snaps to the handle. The handle can be turned sideways if I on a moments notice wants to shoot stills through the normal viewfinder. The screen shield is soft and don't make much resistance when I press my face to the camera.

I have put a small screen shield on the camera for outdoor use. Made it from a mouse mat and sewed Velcro on it. Of course it's not as good as a viewfinder that you attach directly to the camera in bright sunlight. But I find that it works very well for me. I also help with the aiming when using large tele lenses. And in this soccer game it was easy to get an overview of the game and follow the ball with just a minor adjustment of the eye angle: focus at the screen, look up and follow the game while moving the camera, see If a guy runs prior to getting the ball etc etc. You get the point.

The Hama arm I use are made for mounting a flash. It was easy to de-assemble it and reverse the handle so that it pointed downwards.

And if I really wanted to black out the sunlight I use a black cloth over my head and the camera.

The only really downside in using a magnifying glass and being in the sunlight is ... well. :) Twice I thought that I'd been stung by a hornet or something. That magnifying glass packs a heavy sun beam focus point and gave me burn marks!

Wow Boletus. I didn't see your crazy rig. You should send Terry Gilliam an email.

Felipe, can you tell me what is that piece you attached to your Glidecam?

Wow, what a cool idea, I've got to give it a try, I have tried different things, but nothing that completely solves my viewing and focusing problem, :banghead: I always keep going back to a nice piece of black cloth I put over my head that my wife made for me, I get under it with a 2.0 reading glasses (my eyes are still pretty good, so using 2.0 reading glasses is like wearing a portable miscroscope) and everything looks clear.

Thanks for publishing pictures of your setup, I like the shade too, how did you secure the velcro to the camera? I am always afraid to glue anything to my 5D, particularly, if I can't remove it later. Thanks again for sharing that nice picture of your setup... I am sure many out there will find it very useful as well.

No problem! Always glad to assist a fellow human being! The Velcro is just with a good tape glue on one side, and some sort of fabric on the other – for sewing. It doesn't leave any marks at all.

Terry Gilliam? ;) Perhaps. For the onlooker I look crazy with the magnifying glass in my face - eyes like a Titan. But that fits my personality so it's not really a problem. People often come up an ask about the Sherlock Rig.

Yes, it is a home-made counter balance system I attached to the stabilizer, I got tired of supporting all that weight on my wrist, so this helps me transfer some of the weight to my shoulder. it works pretty good; of course is not a a Zacuto system, but it does the trick... Like Boletus, I do get the looks as well (and the laughs sometiimes ) of some bystanders.
