Feature Film - Searching for Sonny Teaser on 5dM2

Postby andrewd on 27 Mar 2009 20:26

I shot this last weekend with the 5dM2. Love the camera even though there were definitely lots of work arounds with exposure. We didn't have too many issues with the rolling shutter or jelly effect. There were some shots where the clip dropped frames.

We're releasing the full trailer on April 15th at http://searchingforsonny.com

Equipment used
- Nikon lenses, most of the shots here are 50mm.
- Kino Gaffer Kit
- Arri Package, 1K, 650, and an inky
- Doorway dolly with two sets of 8 foot track
- One 4x4 frame with opal
- One 4x4 Black Flag
- One 3X2 Black Flack

Here's an .mp4 of the teaser

Love to hear any critiques. DSLR is the future of indie cinema

Looks very cool. Nice marketing on the "first" DSLR feature thing. We're planning the same thing, guess we'll have to put "the 2nd" DSLR feature in our slogan. Do you really think you can pull the whole show off with the 5D? You thinking the GH1 may be better? My only issue with the GH1 is the 17Mb - I have a HF10 and it looks a little thin at 17Mb - the HF S10 looks quite a bit richer at 24Mb. But we still inserted a shot off the HF10 in our last 35mm feature and no one knows on DVD on BluRay!

Lance,

I bet there's someone else who already claimed the whole "first dslr," probably a handfull. We'll both be part of the whole new movement of dslr. :D

I think we could do the whole thing on the Canon 5d. The exposure lock is so annoying on that camera, though, and dual system sound is a pain. But at the end of the day, i thought i was a lot easier than using a hvx with a 35mm adaptor.

I'm excited to see the gh1. I hope it turns out well, but compression issues might bog it down.

Do you have a website? I'd like to check out your stuff.

Wow..really nice work!

Yeah, definitely a Wes Anderson feel to it, but a little more rough around the edges (in a GOOD way)! :-)

I look forward to both seeing more and being able to shoot something of that quality once I can afford the camera!

What's the projected release date or is it a slow-burner?

Really nice! I've been waiting for a 5D feature which employs dolly and so forth.
Even though it's lookin' mighty fine, it still has that "digital motion quality". You all probably already know what I'm talking about, I can't quite put my finger on it, it's just something that always have kept me away from digital, and made me an advocate for film.

I'm actually about to shoot a semi-serious Mark2 film at the end of this week, we'll be using 10 m worth of dolly-tracks, a jib-arm and some other cool stuff.

I can take much credit for lighting the piece. It was my DP, Jeffrey Waldron. Here's a link to his website. http://jeffreywaldron.com He's Incedibly talented.

Are you on facebook? Here's the fan page for the movie, where we have a ton of photos from the production.
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/pages/Searching-For-Sonny/76057349044

Here's some of the lighting setups we had
- The first shot in front of starbucks. We used available parking lot light and then a kino from the left frame to give the edge light. We were powering the kino from my car, so we could only use three bulbs or else the fuse started blowing.
- The Gary Goble Shot - again we had a kino for a hair light. and then used natural light for the key.
- We always used the 4x4 frame with opal - all the key lights were pointed through it

The great thing about this camera is that it's so sensitive. We only had 1 kino kit and 1 arri kit. We'd tried never to shoot at 3200 iso, but had to a couple of times.

I'm gonna upload the photos to flicker too.
