Canon EOS 100D / SL1 review – Handheld Landscapes
The Canon EOS 100D is Canon’s newest entry level DSLR and once again: It also shoots video. I tested the camera and took it out for a walk in the highlands of Scotland.
It’s lightweight, it’s compact, it shoots video. A travel application is the logical conclusion to test this full fledged DSLR.
Beautiful landscapes are a nice thing to shoot. Unfortunately the aliasing the sensor produces makes it less ideal to shoot something that has a lot of detail, like landscapes.
In terms of video quality this camera is similar to the other affordable Canon DSLR’s out there.
So if you’re only looking for this kind of video performance and you don’t care about functionality you will not notice a difference between this one, the new 700D, the 4 year old 7D or anything in between. You can get the Canon EOS T3i for $549 right now (was $400) which offers a very similar look.

Variable ND test: Heliopan vs Tiffen vs LCW mk II
Every large sensor & HDSLR shooter needs an ND filter for outdoor shoots and Variable ND’s have proven mighty useful if you’re a one-man band or on the clock.
But it is also a known fact that some Vari ND’s dampen your shots quality to some extent. So which is the best Variable ND for the money? Tim Fok put together a very useful test in which he compared the most common brands in detail.
This is a guest post written by Tim Fok
So I’m on the look out for a new variable ND filter. I’ve used the LCW mark II for a couple of years now, and have never been particularly keen on the softness it’s always seemed to add. But whilst trying to complete my L series lens collection, the hunt for a new ND filter kind of took a back seat, until now.

Canon T4i / 650D – more test footage
Here’s some more test footage from the new Canon 650D by Johnnie Behiri. Unfortunately no other word on the clean hdmi out he revealed this week.
From the vimeo page:
The camera is very easy and pleasant to use.
Picture quality is identical to the more expensive (but older) 7D.
The real news with this camera (beside the AF which I was not able to test) is the clean HDMI output, a first ever in any Canon VDSLR.
It is yet to be seen if in the final camera firmware it will be 100% usable and functional.
