Shooting RAW on the Canon 5D mark III DSLR is still very popular. You get stunning 14-bit moving images for a fraction of the price of a “real” RAW camera and the advantages of a full-frame sensor that is good in lowlight. But like many other shooters I learned that it’s not always a good idea to use the 5D mark III RAW for a project. Here I’d like to share some points to consider.
I recently wrote an article outlining the latest...
Blackmagic Design announced the newest version of their popular color grading software DaVinci Resolve 11 earlier this year. Today it was released and it brings a bunch of new features that also make it a full fledged editing software!
I recently transitioned to Final Cut Pro X, because I had to edit 5K RAW footage and I spent many hours learning its unusual...
A year ago we tested the Canon 5D mark III RAW hack by Magic Lantern which upgrades the camera to shoot impressive 14-bit RAW footage. In this year development has progressed and in this post we’re looking at what is currently possible and how to do it.

So here we are, it’s only been a matter of time – there’s a bunch of daredevils in Berlin who are shooting a feature length film entirely with a 5D Mark III using the Magic Lantern firmware hack (
The new Blackmagic Production Camera 4K has arrived in the hands of some people already. Blackmagic was kind enough to lend us a test sample and we got familiar with the camera over the last days. At $3000 this is the only camera that currently offers this kind of sharp and cinematic image at a resolution of 4K with a few other benefits and obstacles.
Please note that this camera can deliver very impressive results. After discussing the sensor issues in question I will summarize all the pro’s and con’s at the end of this article. ...
Blackmagic Design has cut the price of its global shutter 4K Production Camera from $3999 to $2999 – probably as a reaction to the announcement of the Panasonic GH4 last week, which is rumored to be priced at $1999 with a similar price tag on the optional XLR/SDI accessory for 10bit 4:2:2 4K output. (Official price in Europe will be € 2735.)
The Blackmagic 4K Production Camera is available for order from B&H now.
In Europe, AF Marcotec offers the camera for € 2.079 net price with an additional €50 off with the exclusive code C5DBMPC4K, valid only until Feb 28.
The price drop will be extended to all pre-orders too, a move that will bring Blackmagic Design a lot of additional sympathy for sure. ...
The saga of the Magic Lantern raw hack was riveting, over the space of a couple of weeks we witnessed development initiating from the possibility of a (relatively slow) raw burst read out from the 5D Mark III, to full HD up to 25p continuous recording (30p recording also using careful considerations). It truly transformed the 5D Mark III, making it the only full frame raw video enabled camera....
We’ve been following the development of the Apertus° Axiom camera which has been going on for quite a while now. It’s a serious, affordable cinema camera with all the features indie filmmakers could wish for. ...
