First footage from the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera released
John Brawley, an Australian director of photography who helps Blackmagic with the development of their Cinema Cameras, has just released the first footage from the much-anticipated Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. He used it for “about an hour” at his local market and put together some shots in Final Cut Pro X.
It’s impressive that this tiny sub-$1,000 camera is able to record in ProRes (he used the ProRes film mode) with 13 stops of latitude with a Super 16mm sensor.
Lenswise he used an IS stabilized Micro 4/3 lens, the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8, plus a Hoya ND16.
Here’s the link to John Brawley’s blog for more detail.
The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is available for preorder from B&H – link see below!

IBC 2012 – Canon EOS C100 is in love with the Ninja

Jeromy Young and his disk recorders have been featured on cinema5D many times. That is not only because his products are targeted at people who want to get the best out of their cameras for the least amount of dinero, but also because Atomos has a vision and follows it obsessively. They keep close relations with all camera manufacturers and make sure their gear integrates with it in a simple yet effective way.
In this interview Jeromy explains in detail why it’s nice to work with a disk recorder like the Ninja 2. It is confirmed that the C100 outputs a 4:2:2 signal through the hdmi port which the Ninja can record via a start-stop trigger signal and save to your editing ready ProRes 422 codec. If you go that route you basically end up with a file that has better compression than a Canon C300, if that is what’s important for you.
The Ninja 2 is available for $995:

The pricetag says $6499:

Interesting grabs from the Blackmagic Cinema Camera

We’ve seen several Blackmagic Cinema Camera samples from Australian based filmmaker John Brawley who has been given the opportunity to be the first to play with the much anticipated new indie filmmaking tool, at times the BMCC is now even referred to as the “baby Alexa” (a hype can go too far at times, let’s see this camera on a set first).

NAB 2012: Atomos Ninja 2 – a hard to beat disk recorder

What gear was used to record this video? Take a guess in the comments, we’ll reveal later.
The reason we like Atomos harddisk recorders is that they are affordable and easy to use. We’ve seen the Ninja at IBC 2011 and reviewed its counterpart the Samurai (link to review) that sports SDI connectivity.
At NAB 2012 ceo Jermoy Young presented their Ninja 2 device, a hardware upgraded version of the existing Ninja model that adds hdmi out and an improved screen. The old Ninja’s screen didn’t perform very well outdoors because it wasn’t very bright and lacked resolution (480×270). The new Ninja 2 has a 800×480 display with improved brightness and a viewing angle of 170°.
It should start shipping shortly and costs $995 like its predecessor:
