An LCD loupe for EOS C100 / C300 / C500. Why not.

Remember Sebastien Devaud’s Canon C100 introduction film (LINK) in September? Well he’s back and he shows us a product that might be a pretty useful and affordable alternative to one of those fancy electronic viewfinders.

The Deitygear 4″ high quality loupe makes us nostalgic and lets us relive the times when we put LCDVF‘s on the rear of our 5D mark II’s. The Deity goes on the EOS C’s flip out LCD and transforms it into a good viewfinder.

I haven’t found the specs for the EOS C’s LCD resolution. But it must me somewhere in between 640×480 and 800×600, probably closer to the former. It’s an important point to consider if the original display resolution is sufficient. Because the loupe won’t give you a sharper image, just make the dots bigger and block out external light.

SmallHD Releases Firmware Update V2.1

SmallHD recently annoucned the release of their latest Firmware Update for the DP6:  V21.  Upgrades and fixes include a new and improved Focus Assist, as well as the option to save Guides to your presets and an improved image calibration as well.

Focus Assist + has been added to replace Focus Assist. (Menu>Advanced>Focus Assist +)

While the old Focus Assist worked well to achieve critical focus, it darkened the image beyond comfortable viewing levels.  The new “Focus Assist+” enhances the in-focus areas even more while retaining the image much more than the original Focus Assist.  This is an excellent new tool to help you achieve accurate focus quickly and efficiently.

Guides can now be saved to Presets. (Menu>Guides)
You can go to any of the adjustable presets and set guides that will save to the monitor’s memory.

Guides can now be saved when powering off the monitor. (Menu>Guides)

Image Calibration Controls now have greater adjustment capabilities. (Menu>Image>)
You will see a more noticeable effect when adjusting these features.

Bug fixes:

Custom Scale Settings are no longer affected by using 1:1 Mapping.

The default Brightness setting on the Composite Input has been adjusted to increase overall  accuracy.

Redrock Micro EVF announced at half price: $375

At NAB last month a lot of companies showed their working or not yet working Electronic ViewFinders. Very useful additions to our dslr video beasts as they will make fancy, frontheavy rigs obsolete, give us a higher resolution eyepiece display and possibly even do hdmi loopthrough for 3rd party monitoring.

So far these amazing tools were priced between $750 and up to over $1000 dollars, but it seems like the new lowest price has just been set down to as low as $375! Keep in mind that that’s about the price of a good lcd loupe alone…

There is no release date for said evf yet, but Redrock Micro’s Brian Valente, who was first to announce an EVF by the way, says that the other companies are“all seeming to add features to justify a price of $750 or even more”
and “to us, that runs counter to the idea of HDSLRs and democratizing high production value. Something different needs to happen” and laid out their production stage as “(…) going back to the designs to see how we can produce high quality for around $350-375 target. It would be a minor miracle, but that’s what we’re working on.”

Brian, we need your evf and we need it now, or soon, but please hurry.
