RED pricedrops: Scarlet-X gets $1800 off, RED ONE for $4000
This weekend RED cut down the prices on all their camera bodies. The Scarlet-X’ price has been reduced to $7950 and the Epic now costs almost half. Is this a result of Sony’s massive camera announcement last week?
RED’s Jim Jannard doesn’t seem to call Sony’s announcement the cause for their pricedops. About the F5 and F55 he says: “These two camera announcements are significant. While I do not see them as a threat to EPIC or Scarlet… I do see them as a threat to the conventional and outdated thinking of the industry that tried so hard to cling to “1080P and 2K are good enough”.”
and says that they have lowered their “assembly costs, found better suppliers and fully paid off our NRE.” (…) “Since our costs are now significantly lower we are re-pricing our cameras as of now.”
The timing of RED’s price drops is still an interesting one and raises some questions concerning how well RED is armed against the wave of competitive large sensor cameras that are flooding the market right now.
Here are the exact price changes:

RED Scarlet – 120fps footage

DSLR world is pretty silent at the moment. Maybe It’s the “calm before the storm” as Canonrumors suggests who claim that new rumors are imminent.
In the meantime you can see how the RED Scarlet does 120fps. You can’t see? Did someone forget to open the aperture? Are we missing the post processing of the footage here? That’s too bad…
If someone wants to do that you can grab the source file here: reduser.net
The footage was shot on a prototype camera and they “Got 120fps working” this week. So how many more years does that make for an estimated release?

Ted Schilowitz pooh-poohs my hdslr and I still think RED is cool
By: Sebastian Wöber
I went over to the RED booth today which is a 200 meter (figure that out in feet yourself plz) walk from all the rest of the video gear stuff.
I ran into Ted Schilowitz and I think he liked my nerdcam setup since he knew what he had in his hands was a far superior camera to any other compact shooter out there right now.
You also might or might not have noticed the remark on Arri’s relatively new Alexa camera, referred to as “the rest of the world”. Yes, it’s true, the Alexa is only HD because the developers thought it would suffice back when they started creating it. The Alexa was developed in my home town by the way, in Vienna Austria, so he got me there again. No hard feelings though cause he’s got a good point saying his camera is more of a movie camera, I’d also rather reboot that Epic than rec.709 the Alexa I must admit.
Ted also talked about the Epic-S camera which will be what the Scarlet once was on paper. It will have interchangeable lenses and a bigger sensor than the Scarlet. No price on the Epic-S, and I’m pretty sure that means we’ll have to wait “a bit” more. Scarlet will be around $6k, but only have a 2/3 inch sensor. I’m sure this will be THE killer documentary camera though and we’ll hear a lot about this one on cinema5D.
