Apertus AXIUM progress – 175fps @ 4K, under $10k
The image on the left depicts the prototype of the ongoing project named “AXIOM”, a camera by people who are passionate about creating a strong competitor in the quickly growing 35mm digital cinema camera market.
We reported about the AXIOM camera in July when the project was first made official which they had started work on in 2006. They are now in the next phase of their project with a soon to be finished prototype which is exciting news.
Apertus personally stopped by at our office and discussed their project with us in detail. I can tell you that these are very dedicated people and they seem to have all the parts together to create an exciting camera.

FilmConvert – film look done right! (-10% code)
We’ve seen many grading apps and plugins made to take our footage that extra step towards the film look many of us are so keen to achieve: To make our films look cinematic, organic and nice. But none of them is quite as easy to use and gives you as spot on beautiful results as FilmConvert.
Does it work? Yes it does. I’ve been using FilmConvert for the past several weeks now and I’m very pleased with everything it has done. On any other software doing a quick film grade takes time and I have to smear up my footage with numerous looks, most of them being way to exaggerated. FilmConvert applies just the subtle changes needed to get digital footage where film would be.
The people from FilmConvert measured the exact differences from certain cameras to certain analogue film stocks. The software detects which camera your footage was shot with and alters it accordingly. The result is always right and each of the included 8 (light version) or 19 (pro version) stocks looks very nice. There’s also an exposure and colour temperature tab to do primary corrections and a 3-way colour correction and levels tab to do some rough grading.
FilmConvert has become an essential asset for colour correction workflow. From now on every digital material will go through FilmConvert in one way or another.

IBC 2012 – Affordable motorized sliders are coming
We thank our sponsor B&H who
has made cinema5D’s news
coverage of IBC 2012 possible.
Get your gear through B&H to support this platform: www.bhphotovideo.com
Here we have new motorized sliders by two different companies.
The Varavon slider costs is very affordable and can also upgrade existing Varavon sliders. The Lanparte slider goes faster and can memorize motion, but is also more expensive.
Varavon has made some good products. I’m sure this slider is worth checking out if you’re looking for motion at an affordable price.
The Varavon slidecam sliders will be available here sooner or later, in the meantime you can check the
Varavon website.
The dedicated motorized slider will be $1100 and the normal kit version (base slider with upgrade kit) $980.
Varavon told me there are different motors for different speeds.
Lanparte is a brand I am not very familiar with, but their slider looked very interesting. As they had a German representative it was also culturally easier to get a conversation about their products started.
It is hard to beat the Varavon pricetag, but the Lanparte slider had some unique features like the memory, the fast motion and the timelapse functionality. Also it seemed robust.
