Birns and Sawyer will be hosting a HD DSLR Seminar with Canon on March 16th, 2010.Tim Smith from Cannon will be there with plenty of new toys to play with. According to the email, the seminar will cost $35. They are also planning to raffle a new Canon Rebel T2i /550D off to the participants of the seminar/workshop. DxO Labs got their hands on a pre-production Canon 550D for testing. I put up the results against a Canon 7D. The results between the 550D and 7D are almost identical. The 7D slightly beats the 550D in the “Low-Light†category. For the other categories the differences were nominal.
Urban Fox TV put up this video on vimeo of David Parry from Canon UK describing some of the functions of the new T2i or 550D in Europe. On paper it seems to be very similar to the 7D. A new “Movie Crop†mode will give you a digital 7X crop factor at only 640 x 480. They claim a release date of February 24th.
Ryan Bilsborrow-Koo wrote a great long format article covering the basics of shooting video with a DSLR. This even handed intro to DSLR film making sums it all up very nicely. Â I would suggest doing your own research before buying any of the recommended products in this review, as so much of this equipment needs to be tailored to fit the users needs. If you are brand new to DSLR film making this will answer many of your questions as it reads like a “Best OF” the Cinema5D forum. If you are a pro and have been shooting with a DSLR for some time you may find a new trick or two to add to you repertoire.

Today, Canon announced the kick ass new Rebel T2i. Yes, it will shoot 24fps. Yes, it has manual exposure controls. Yes, it’s under a grand! This is some great news for anyone holding back on buying one of these killer new DSLR’s. I think I just heard a nail going into a coffin over at Nikon. Here is a snip-it from the press release.
“The Rebel T2i DSLR captures video in both NTSC (National Television System Committee) and PAL (Phase Altering Line) standards at selectable frame rates including Full HD 1920 x 1080 at 30 (29.97), 25 or 24 (23.976) fps, and HD 1280 x 720 or Standard Definition 640 x 480 quality video, at 60 (59.94) or 50 fps.”

The Canon T2i has been rumored to have some cool new features, including selectable frame rates with HD video. Let’s hope one of the selections is 24/25P. It would make perfect sense for Canon to add 24/25P HD video to its consumer friendly line of cameras. A new battery (LP-E8) and a few other features were mentioned, no big deal there. However, “selectable frame rates†got my attention. Film students rejoice!
