Canon EOS C500 – first short film: ALEX

Nino Leitner (DOP) and his team had a chance to play with the Canon EOS C500, Canon’s flagship 4K cinema camera. This short film, titled “ALEX” is the result of a very tightly shot no budget camera test.

Is “Alex” a reference to the Arri Alexa? I haven’t asked, but even though the character in the short comes out as a winner, Nino’s review mentions the C500 as a serious contender to the rest of the RAW family.

Nino has a lot to say about his experience with the camera. On his blog he reviews it in great detail with a very positive conclusion:

I think the C500 will take its place in the production world quickly [...] using the same 4K sensor but it delivers what many were hoping for the C300 would deliver – 4K raw uncompressed footage, 120 frames per second in 4K “half raw” and 2K, and a whole lot of other varieties, with the image quality and look we have come to love from the C300.

But Nino Leitner also mentions some problems he ran into when shooting in 4K on the C500,

2K RAW samples of chinese KineRAW S35 camera

EOSHD reports about new samples of the Chinese KineRAW cinema camera. A probably more affordable alternative to the Arri Alexa that looks equally if not more bulky and also records at 12bit 2K RAW.

The picture above is an uncompressed screenshot from one of the clips. The screenshot can be downloaded here:

Note: You will need the CineForm decoder for the RAW codec. It’s a small program you can download for Windows and Mac here.

The KineRAW S35 has a super 35mm sized sensor and can record up to 30 frames per second. There is no information on pricing as of yet.

If you want to know more about this camera see the details in this article where the KineRAW camera was first announced.

Off Topic: Arri Alexa Ships In June, 2010.

acr2111428By: Jared Abrams

A lucky few will get their hands on the Alexa this month. The newest digital camera from Arri is poised to dominate the professional digital market from companies like RED and Sony. The Alexa will ship without the new DTE (Direct To Edit) technology. A few Beta test versions will ship with DTE and Apple’s ProRes 442HQ and 4444 Codecs for further evaluation. The term “Game Changer” comes up a lot these days with new technology. This is by far the best pro digital camera I have seen to date. Here is a quote from HD Magazine from the managing director of Arri, Munich.

“Franz Kraus, Managing Director of ARRI in Munich, commented on the release to customers: “ARRI has delivered on its commitment to customers at IBC2009 – ALEXA is shipping in June, with an entry price point of EURO45.000 and with a rich feature list which today’s technology-savvy and quality-driven customers have fully embraced. With important reference productions such as Hugo Cabret and many accolades from industry innovators, ALEXA is now positioned in the market at the very highest level, offering unrivalled quality, reliability and performance at a very competitive price.”
