Sony F55 & Canon 1DC – 4K side by side

Sony PMW-F55cinema5D had a chance to test the new Sony F55, Sony’s new flagship 4K cinema camera. As a reference we used Canon’s most advanced HDSLR.

The F55 is an interesting camera, because it is one that ticks more boxes than any other camera over the past few years – the range of resolutions, frame rates, codecs as well as the ergonomics are unprecedented. Now it’s down to actually using it to make a judgement call.

We wanted to know how the camera performs in a normal sooting environment and took the Canon EOS 1DC 4K HDSLR with us for comparison. Some interesting conclusions can be drawn here, things you might consider if you plan on shooting with either of these cameras or would just like to see what to expect.

Canon 1DC firmware – getting 25p mode in 4K?

The restriction of 24 frames per second was something that held many Europeans off from considering the EOS 1DC 4K HDSLR as their camera of choice. Canonrumors reports that 25p mode could be coming next week via a firmware update.

We’ve been asking around at Canon regarding the 24p limit last year, but so far it seemed like we have to live with no 25p in 4K on the 1DC.
There’s no information on how real the information regarding a 25p firmware update is, but it would definitely help many people in 25p countries who have been looking into the 1DC.

We have a 1DC here at our office and have been able to shoot some tests with it. At first glance both the 4K mode as well as the super35 crop mode seem to deliver fine and sharp images. Especially crop35 is a lot more than I’ve seen on a HDSLR before. The fullframe HD mode seems very handy, but has a less crisp image to it. We will continue to test the camera and post something at a later time. This is definitely a very interesting camera to consider. 25p would be just one more good reason to stick with it.
