GUIDE: Get 24p RAW on a 5D mark III (Magic Lantern)

Canon 5D mark III 14bit RAW

Yes, the source for the still above is a 1080p 14bit RAW shot with the 5D mark III!!! Here’s a test video showing you how that looks in motion with an article elaborating the work with the camera: LINK. If you haven’t seen it you should check it out.

Yesterday the developers working on the Magic Lantern hack for the Canon 5D mark III posted about their progress on a RAW hack that enables the Canon 5D mark III to shoot continuous 14bit RAW at 24 frames per second (!!!). We tested it and it works, and the results are totally breathtaking and revolutionary (videos and review to follow later today). Here’s how you can do it too!

If you’re not a computer scientist it’s not easy to get the Magic Lantern hack and 14bit RAW module working that was posted in the Magic Lantern forums yesterday. There are no guides around and it’s still in its early Alpha stage.
After struggling for a day we managed to pull it off so here’s our complete dummies guide to squeeze the RAW bits out of a 5D mark III.

Sony F55 Review & Music Video

NAB Show 2013 – news round-up – April 9

It was a very busy first day with a bunch of new announcements via press conferences last morning, at we are sure we missed a lot of the stuff because there is so much going on here on the show floor at the same time – but here’s what the cinema5D team found to be significant on April 9, the first day of NAB Show 2013.

- Blackmagic Design 4K Production Camera & Pocket Cinema Camera

Like last year, Blackmagic succeeded in stealing everyone’s show by announcing their incredibly low-priced new cameras, one being a S35mm 4K camera, the other one being a S16mm camera that you can put in your pocket. For details, please check out our posts about the cameras here and here.

Blackmagic 4K camera – super35 global shutter sensor for $4K

Blackmagic is starting off NAB with a press conference in an hour and some specs have been leaked that are crazy intriguing: A 4k cinema camera with a super 35mm sensor and global shutter priced at $4000. Together with a smaller, pocket 16mm sensor camera for just $1000.

Blackmagic Production Camera 4KBlackmagic is back with yet another big bang at the start of NAB. Last year they took everyone by surprise when they suddenly showed up with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera, a revolutionary camera with a 12 bit raw option at an incredible pricepoint.

Who would have thought they’d be back with yet another surprise overtaking everything else we’ve recently seen in terms of specs. The new cameras are called Blackmagic Production Camera 4K and Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. If the camera can actually hold up to the specs and will be delivered within under a year is a whole other question.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera

Ultra-portable super-16 digital cinema camera with super wide 13 stops of dynamic range. Super 16 sized 1080p HD sensor, built in SD card reader, High resolution LCD, ProRes and Lossless CinemaDNG RAW recording, Active Micro Four Thirds lens compatibility, Micro HDMI monitoring with Overlays.

There’s also talk of a new software by Blackmagic, an editing / color grading hybrid for on set use. Something that sounds like it could be handy for indie filmmakers like you.
