We saw a lot of interesting things today at IBC, but there was one item in particular that I found shows us a little bit better where we’re heading in terms of video development and what new cameras might be able to do for us in the near future.

In this video I talked to European Product Manager Gustav Werner Emrich who seemed to lay out the route they’re pursuing quite clearly. No large sensors, no interchangeable lenses, but 4k at the new cinema camera entry level price of the FS-100 (6-7k €).

Gustav didn’t give me a timeframe, and I think it’s a good thing that they’re not pushing this and that they rather make sure that it works with the obvious artistic limitations (1/2 inch sensor).
There’s an honesty to this approach that I like, rather than almost offering it all, like all the others did: Software that limits cameras with tricks like low bitrates, crippled hdmi output feeds, unkillable overlays, autoexposure, etc…

As proof that the footage is real Gustav showed us that a second prototype model of the camera was actually sitting underneath the TV set (we weren’t allowed to take pictures of it). It had 4 cables going to the TV set. I have no idea what kind of connection that was.

We made a photo of the screen behind Gustav, but unfortunately these pictures do not represent the incredible sharpness and resolution the camera provided in the least bit so I decided not to post them. Sorry guys, you will have to come here and see the screen for yourself.
And while you’re at it you should really check out the 7k camera and 7k TV (or was it 8k?) they have in the other hall. It’s unreal! You might think 4k is enough, but there’s more!

I’m getting the impression RED was right to bet on the resolution horse and that the time when we’ll be laughing at 1080p is not too far away anymore.
