Grover Sanschagrin posted this little tips section from his site. Robert Caplin shot ” Betrayed” on a Canon 5D Mark II. He shared some tips on getting better video from a HD DSLR. One thing that stood out for me was the tip on using motion to help move things along. Still photographers getting into the video game could learn from this one. Sometimes it only takes a little movement of the camera to add greatly to the scene. He also suggests using a tripod. I will make sure Chris Collins my Cameraman for C5D news gets that one in his head.

Nice article. One thing mentioned that I don’t necessarily agree with is the “shoot wide open” point, in many cases shooting wide open with fast lenses (say f1.8 or faster) simply makes everything that’s out of focus too muddy and not all that similar to what you see in a lot of 35mm projects. While it’s fun (for me anyway) to try and shoot precisely with such a narrow DOF, it doesn’t always look aesthetically pleasing as soft objects/subjects can look odd as they get extremely soft. In a lot of scenarios, shooting between say a f2.8 and a f5.6 will still give a cinematic DOF, but just not as extreme as the equipment is ultimately able achieve. I would also say the shoulder rigs (like the redrock mentioned) are able to provide a stable platform for a steady image. There’s no substitute for shooting on sticks, but the right equipment and practice can give very pleasing results, even with lightweight DLSRs.

Ewwww… 30FPS. That firmware needs to hurry for those 5D users. He has great tips for starters
